any suggestions on red mange?

First off, thank you for your concern, I appreciate it. Could you tell me how many people "treat" their own flocks on this forum? Or how many treat their own wounds or injuries? Home treatment is NOT horrible. Secondly, he's not needlessly suffering. He is being kept as comfortable as possible until he sees the vet. He's got localized red mange, which can clear up on his own, but he is also in need of his vaccines as I picked him up on the side of the road after seeing 3 cars nearly hit him. He does not appear to be in any pain, the scratching is minimal, and I was TRYING to prevent any pain or itching until he could be seen by the vet as he is 500 miles from where I am currently. But he DOES have an appointment already in place.

After saving him from certain death on the road, i spoke with the neighbor of this supposed "owner" who informed me that he had already been hit by a car once. We found the broken rib, already healed and not healed correctly so I know it was not treated. He had no food and green water, it was 96 degrees the day i picked him up. Left my name and number and address on the door of the home. It was 4 days before anyone got the note, telling me that no one had been by to give him fresh water....it was in the upper 90's all of those days. To date, its been almost 2 weeks, tomorrow will be 2 weeks exactly and still, no one has called to check on him. I know someone has been home because the car that has just been sitting for the past 2 weeks is now gone. I PERSONALLY think the poor dog is much better off with us, even if we couldnt get an appointment for him right away, I trust my vet and knowing his condition is not life threatening or causing excruciating pain, I chose to wait to see him.

What is so bad about asking if anyone else had used certain treatments for an ailment? I was actually looking for a non-toxic/less toxic treatment as opposed to the neuro-toxins they will give him at the vet. Hence asking about peroxide/borax mix. I've also heard nu-stock treats it very well, which I have coming, in order to try, if for nothing else, my rottie gets hot spots and i'll use it on her. But I also had read before asking here about the ivamectin, i HATE poisons, and I have kids so i dont like to keep them around the house. But rest assured, when I make that 8 hour trip on Friday, with another Boston that was dumped on my porch, literally, who is going to another family member who learned to love the breed from the ones i had/have we will be taking him to see the vet. So provided that i get me and both kids and the other Boston out the door right on schedule, we dont hit traffic on that long journey, and nothing bad happens, he'll be there by 4pm on friday. We're also on a call list if anyone cancels to get him in earlier even if my husband has to leave work early.

So excuse me if i seem a tad annoyed by this post, but I will do ANYTHING for an animal that is within my power to do. Your post was a bit condecending and insulting since you clearly do not have all the information and you are guessing what the situation is. Truth is this...all i wanted to know was if anyone had any luck with any other treatments of the condition. That is all, I did not ask for professional diagnosis, nor did I ask for someone to tell me what a horrible person i am for saving the dog's life.

Ohh and it's not about money either. The situation does not warrent an emergancy vet visit, had he been in dire need of attention, he would have gotten it right away.Yeah, I hate being judged by those who dont know me based on their own misguided feelings and lack of information.

I'm sorry again for everyone else on this thread, I hate feeling like i have to defend myself against those who do not know me, but I just can't help it, it's who I am. I'm sorry you had to read this, but I felt it necessicary to explain the situation so that perhaps this person would maybe reconsider jumping to conclusion and judging those they do not know without important information.

I would say mange is a little more extensive than a headache. It's a serious condition, and when dosing Ivermectin, I'd want to get a for sure assessment rather than oh, that worked for me and google searches.

Since, you know, it can kill an animal.

If an animal had something simple like a cut in a strange spot, or what have you, I would agree. It'd be silly to take to a vet. But exposing a family to mange, plus allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll the other possible internal parasites just seems silly to not spend the 200 bucks on a vet visit. If it was so poorly treated it could have heartworms, round worms, giardia, anything really.

It's just my opinion, I just don't think it's fair to the rescuer or the animal.

Red mange is not contageous so no worries there. If he has heart worm, we'll find out, just as we would with any other puppy we decided to bring into our animal loving family. He's been wormed for a wide awray of parasites, with a wormer obtained from a local vet. I think he's being treated a whole lot better than he was where he came from. He's currently sleeping on my husbands pillow.
I think he looks pretty darned good for the crappy care i'm apparently giving him. This is after 5 days in my house, and he gained nearly a pound in those first 5 days

This was his first day here right after his first bath

Not to imply that cost is an issue for you Heathero but it is in general.

Everyone has a budget. Assuming your budget is $1000. If you rescue dogs an take them all to the vet an spend $200 average on them you can only rescue 5 dogs. If you learn how to do most things without a vet you may be able to rescue 50 or more.

Then there's the fact that most people that raise/breed a type of animal have more knowledge about there type of animal than a vet will. So if I have an emergency I go to a vet. Everything else I can do my self or with the help of someone in the know.

You're exactly right. I wasnt directing my mini rant towards you, I'm sorry if it seemed that way. I didnt even read your post about the money until afterwards. I've rescued 13 dogs in the past 4 months. Most i have turned over to a rescue group to rehome, but not until they were bathed, fed, and loved for several days. At 1 point we had a dog and her 5 pups here, which I had to bottle feed eery 3 hours because the mother was so malnourished, she had dried up. These guys, since I have a personal and deep love for the breed i've taken it upon myself to find homes for them, although we'll most likely keep this particular guy with us. My husband works out of state and comes home once a month. So he took the pup with him to have some extra company, in the mean time...my father in law is falling in love with him ...so when the time comes for hubby to come home for good, there might be a custody battle! We've also kept the very first stray who showed up here, skinny, tick laden and would not come to us. Took nearly a month to get him to come out of the woods and allow us to touch him. He's still skiddish and has learned the dog door at my parents house on top of the hill. He lives at both houses, so I always say i have 2.5 dogs....well.... its 4.5 dogs for now. He wont allow us to bathe him yet, and hes mainly an outside dog. I'll have some serious headache getting him in to the vet in a few weeks since he's so shy. But the boy MUST be neutered, we dont like dangly bits around here! Its good to know someone understands what I was trying to accomplish here. Thanks again for understanding! A little goes a long way.

I came to the reasonable conclusion that you were not planning on taking him to the vet. You responded with a well written post that is *gasp* full of all the information that you did not post when you started this thread.

I never said you were horrible.

I never said you were providing crappy care.

I'm not even going to respond to those statements other than what I just said. Simply because I never said that.

As far as treating goes for routine things, that's different. Worming schedules that are prescribed by a vet (example Heartguard/advantix) or vitamins in the water or simple scraps/cuts/abrasions, all fine and good to treat in the home.

I'm sorry that your posts were all incredibly brief, never mentioned vet care, or that you were five hundred miles from home; leading me to reasonably believe that you were looking for a quick and cheap fix.

This is the last I'll say on the subject. I believe that my post was reasonable, just as you believe that your response with all the missing information makes me look like I was attacking you, and criticizing your animal care. Good luck with the dog.

Not to nit pic, but post number7 says she is taking him to the vet, so did post number 8 and 10, didn't get past that, but it had been mentioned several times.

Ah, I stand corrected, then. I completely missed it.

Actually, I stated in my initial post that I had plans on getting him to the vet. My fault for not using the eact term "vet" but i certainly did give indication of my intentions. My initial post below:

Took in a neglected Boston a week and a half ago, he's clearly got red mange >aka Demodectic mange< Have been bathing him with medicated shampoo knowing full well it will not cure him or even affect the mites. Just looking to give him a bit of relief until his immune system comes back into line. He was malnourished, caked in mud and muck, hit by a car and had a broken rib that was clearly never treated. I just want something to try and help him BEFORE i go and have all of those toxic things administered to him. Poor guy cant be any older than a year....if that. I read a recipe for peroxide and borax as a dip....anyone ever try it? Thanks in advance.

just seems silly to not spend the 200 bucks on a vet visit

Treating for Demodex mange can take months, and it would mean taking the do g to the vet every day

If you cleared it up in 4 weeks, and only paid $35 per visit, that's still over $1000, not counting the cost of the medication
Then theres the gas and time involved

You can buy a 50 ML bottle of Ivomec for around $40, and all the syringes you'd need for less than $20.

Would you really load up your animal every day and drive to a Vet just so they could squirt a small amount of liquid in it's mouth?

It can be drawn up and given in under a minute
