any suggestions on red mange?

You've got that right! Not to mention I dont live where he is currently staying and my husband can not take off work early every single day to take him to the vet. Thats why i want him to go to our old vet, he'll give me what I need for the entire treatment course with instructions and have us come back for a check at a later date. I've already spoken to him and he has told me once he confirms that is the problem, although he said he's pretty sure i'm right, that he will just give me the instructions and send me on my way to TSC. He's an old guy, I call him Mr Magoo has really cool displays in the waiting room of very very old and primative vet utensils. Had to take a stray kitten to him once because it had a warble in its nostril, once he got it >after my failed attempts< he put it on display as well, right along side a wad of twine a dog had swallowed and had to be surgically removed.

People seem to assume if you don't always "take" an animal to a Vet that you don't ASK a Vet what to do.

My Vet is the one who told me how to treat the mange AFTER she came and saw the dog .

You don't just toss a 150 lb Maremma in a car and ride him to the Vet, and a couple of my Maremmas won't let anyone but me or my wife handle them at all.

Another thing most don't think about is every time you carry a dog into a Vet's office, you're exposing it to a lot of sick animals, and you never know what you will bring home​

Beautiful dog! I think my post was confusing LOL Just a ton going on right now so i'm sorry if i lost anyone as much as i lost myself when i went back to read! Just like when people say "i'm not going to the hospital....there are sick people there!" Its true....so very true, i've seen dogs just squat and do their thing right there on the floor, so who knows what sort of nasty your dog or cat will pick up from there. I've used my vet for my pets since i was 16 years old, he knows that i know a bit about animals so he will discuss things with me via phone. I tried to talk him into moving with us, but he wouldnt.

Ivomectin given by injection and then orally will help with demodex but it takes longer than a mitaban dip. A mitaban dip given once every two weeks, for perhaps three times- depends on the individual dog, is usually how we treat demodectic mange at my job.

Had a dog in yesterday- was found at a truck stop. Full coat of fur two weeks ago when found, now almost bald. It wasnt demodex but was sarcoptic mange. The woman who rescued her had red bumps all over her arms legs and abdomen. Told her to go to the human doctor because while demodex isnt contagious, scabies definitely is.

I can't stand to see ANY animal neglected or abused. My mom told me I moved to the wrong place to be as soft hearted as I am. I think she's on to something there LOL

Mitaban is INDEED nasty stuff. Hate using it. Its pretty much the protocol with my doctors though, so we just gown and glove up and then hurry up. lol
Perhaps it wont be necessary in your pups case- I hope he can clear it up with orals.

Update.

"Jake" as my husband has started calling him, has been on his ivomec for a few days now. He's also on antibiotics and vit suppliments. He got a shot of a steroids and is "drying up" little by little. I can't wait until he's got fur again. When I arrived here, i was horrified to see how much of his coat he had lost. The pictures Hubby was sending didnt show it well at all. He's got a special benzoil peroxide shampoo we have used on him once and he's due to visit the tub again tonight. He's gained a bit more weight, nearly 22 lbs now which is HUGE to me for a Boston as my girls came in around 13 lbs full grown and this guy is young! Just wanted to update and say thanks again...now back to my regularly scheduled vacation.

Glad to hear he's improving.

It will help his coat and skin if you give him a few Fish Oil capsules and some VItamin E every day too.

My dogs would eat the Fish Oil like treats, and I'd mix the Vitamin E with their food

Just wanted to say thank you to Heathero617 and everyone else who posted on this thread. I just got home from the vet with Odin our one year old GSD that we rescued approx a month ago. The diagnosis was dem. mange, which I have never dealt with before. The vet gave me Ivomec at the daily dosage listed. I am going to bring him back in 3 weeks to have him retested. It was a great relief to read about others experiences with this. The only part I hate is that I paid $75 for 15 mls of Ivomec!!!!!! If he does need more I am buying it through Jeffers.
