6chickens in St. Charles :

I "googled" the subject, discovered good things about Silkies for food. for instance, silkie is the main ingredient in the broth for mongolian hotpot (in american restraunts). and the dark meat goes great with sweet, hot dishes like ginger, red pepper, cayenne, garlic etc.

Reading that made me hungry

Not sure if you watch FoodNetwork but they have a show called "Chopped" and had a Halloween themed show on a few weeks back and one of the meats they supplied was a silkie. Of course they just called it a black skinned chicken!! Was really weird looking!!

i watched the show and recorded it to show others. one of the judges called it silkie. btw any one want to buy some fat, juicy silkies?

I've eaten Silkie meat. It was very good, what there was of it.

My DB used to raise them and he had a population explosion, so we ate a bunch of them. Odd looking, but good. Really not any different than any other home raised chicken I've eaten.

I will be trying silkie meat in the spring. I have a good friend who is in the juvenile stages of a serious breeding project, and i will be getting all unwanted birds. Most of the hens will go to a little flock of broodies, and the roos, well, they will go to the pot pie palace! What meat I do get, I will try to do as many things with as possible, and I will post recipes along with pics and my personal opinions.
In regards to all the comments on here about other cultures eating things that are not common to our own culture, I say.... Go for it! Im a cajun(the mild term), and if it walks, crawls, or flies, I could probably make a gravy for it, and a darn good one too! And if I find myself in a situation where i am offered foreign cuisine by hospitible folk, I aint about to turn it down, so long as they got good local brew to wash it down!

I cant imagine silkie meat being different from any other chicken.
As for different meats being eaten, here in nz some extreme city peoples question me why I have chickens yet still eat chicken...I freaked them out by saying if cat was on the market, I would eat that too, despite having two of them. I wouldnt really, its just that eating chicken is the accepted culture, so what the heck...my girls would never make their way to the pot, but if there was some puffed-up roo crowing every morning...
Question; the french eat frogs legs and snails (which doesnt taste too bad). Does this make them "uncivilized", despite being renouned as one of the best countries in terms of food?

Asian communities will also eat all dogs and cats they can get their hands on, besides bats ants and roaches to name few species they consume.

But I am not Asian, that's why I wonder if Silkie meat will be palatable to me.

Not cause they have lots of meat or I want to eat Silkies, but what to do with ALL EXTRA ROOSTERS....

That's the problem.

Ignorant racist post of the year.

"Ignorant racist post of the year"

Really?

So according to you it is it ignorant and "rasist" that Germans eat craut, Irish eat cabbage and potatoes, Polacks eat sausage and pierogies and Italians like lots of pasta?

It is a known fact is that Asians eat dogs, cats, snakes, balut, (17 days of development duck embrios) etc. weather anybody likes it or not.

Anybody denying that is a PC hypocryte.

You're ignorant and racist is because you're stereotyping races out there when you haven't seen it for yourself and the derogatory manner in which you wrote it in... plus have you been to Asia? and have you seen them ''eat all the dogs and cats they could get their hands on''??? it sounds rather insulting and ignorant to make such a comment displaying disrespect/disgust at something simply because different countries have different cultures - India doesn't eat cows does that mean us westerners are disgusting for eating beef??
Ps Balut is duck foetus not embryo...(not embrios)
plus it's whether not weather and it's hypocrite not hypocryte.... that's just me being a grammar nazi
