Anybody else having sticker shock on coffee?

Our facility cut us off cold turkey:( 125 people--25,000$ a year on coffee and creamers and such....talk about a nasty -rude staff the next day! cat scratch fever I tell yah! We got smart and bought a secret coffee pot:)

Our shop charges from 6-8 bucks for a 1/ lb and 10-12 for a whole pound. Organics being the more expensive.
however, you do get what you pay for..
ie: higher caffine content, better flavor, more local roasts

In the name of BYC Science, I have now poured myself a little cup of dandelion root "coffee"....

after the terrible time with the greens, I must say this is drinkable. Mostly, it smells good, somewhat nutty/chocolatey. Ok, definitely something to add to the list of Zombie Prep Skills. edited to add: this bitter aftertaste is really growing. ick.

But I'm texting DH to pick up the best stuff he can find on the way home. I'll just have to drink more herbal teas. I believe I'll dig out the old drip machine and use it just to keep a pot of my herbal tea hot all morning, and another in the afternoon.

Sorry guys but the only person around here that drinks coffee is me--unless my oldest DD comes home for the holidays--so I buy the best. I buy American: every third month or so I order 4 lbs of Kona from a grower in Hawaii for $22 a lb. Price hasn't gone up in a couple of years. It is my indulgence.

For those of you who like super FRESH coffee, you can roast your own with an old air popcorn popper:

I ordered the 5 lb. sampler pack from this company and have been roasting my own for just a few weeks with decent results:

I'm afraid the price is coming out about the same as my local sources for organic/fair-trade roasted beans, but it's nice to be able to roast in small batches for freshness (and it is fun).

Be sure to do it outside, as it is smoky, and coffee bean chaff flies everywhere.

Some of the reason prices are going up is because the price of chemical fertilizer has sky rocketed along with crude prices. I wonder if this is going to make organic more comparable in price...

My local orange guy mentioned that his fertilizer price has gone up $5 usd \\100 lbs . Not that bad when you have a tree or two, but he has over 400 acres to do. His fertilizer cost lats year this time(2x/year application) was $36,000.00 usd and this year it's going to be much higher. 5 years ago we could buy a 100 lb of 19-9-19 for less than $15 and today that same bag is over $40.
