I contacted my local town, they said I can be put on the agenda for December...not ready. But have to get everything to them, including $600 to have a public hearing at the meeting and $250 to try to get a variance. Recommended for us to do both. My daughter really wants a couple of chickens, but for one, that's a lot of money and another he didn't sound too optimistic. Plus, that's too soon. Right now, you can have up to 4 if you have an acre or more which really doesn't make sense since lots are all made different.

Were you successful? There are numerous towns that have been changing them around us and now have them, but that's a lot of money.

My daughter wants to try to raise the money to be able to contest the ordinance. She has raise money for other causes in the past. Any ideas?

Hi. :frow

That stinks. Is there any way you can apply for a fee waiver?

Some cities to have an exception clause for 4H kids that doesn't require changes to the ordinance and allows them to raise even a sheep or such in the city.

When I lived in Bakersfield, we were allowed 4 on our city lot. But as more people started keeping chickens they tried adding in permit fees and such. Which they did have programs to help rid rats and other rodents, which people who keep chickens often don't realize THEY are creating the problem by free feeding them.

I might consider writing a letter to the news paper or asking a local station to do a story on it to drum up support from your local public!

Good luck, keeping chickens really is a lot of fun and rewarding in so many other aspects of life. It's GREAT that your daughter WANTS to do something productive! It's too bad that municipalities are often about penalizing those who are doing the right thing instead of holding those who don't accountable. If only they realized what a difference an experience like this can make in the life of a child! But I seem to be under the impression that the government does NOT want the people to be self sustaining but rather to depend on them. Control the water, control the food... control the people! :duc

Sorry for the mini rant, guess you can see where I stand. :D

Thanks for the suggestions. They have agreed to do bob for $250, but that is still a lot, especially when the person I talked to didn't sound too confident. So, my daughter said she is going to try to figure out something to make to sell, will collect aluminum cans or think about what else she can do. LOL But, need time to work on all of these things.

But, your info definitely helps with some reasons of why to get chickens other than because we want them from what they think is the only reason. :(
