All of the above are facts stated by a few, but here is the problem with this situation. I know for a FACT that most hens that do go broody, never finish the brooding process.
The ones that do stay broody, hatch a few chicks and raise a certain % of the ones hatched. What I see wrong with this is the fact of all the chicks that are LOST due to not finishing the brooding process or poor parenthood by the ones that do hatch chicks.
I get 85% hatch in the dead hot summer in an incubator and raise 95% of what hatches in the hottest part of summer or the coldest part of winter.. it doesn't matter which. Prove to me that a hen can do this, and I might try it out sometime. until then, I will set my own eggs
