In the Brooder
I want a pet mouse so bad, but I'm scared of all the transmitable diseases it could give me, I always hear, "dont get it from petco or petsmart" if they say that, then where should I get one!?

I've had mice before and they're good pets. I've gotten them from Petco before and haven't had any disease issues, but they are always skittish from there because a lot of the time they aren't handled at all and they're intended as snake food and not pets. If you have a little local pet store I'd say get one from there - oftentimes they breed their own and they're handled more.
Or I could also recommend getting pet gerbils if you want a rodent similar to a mouse. Gerbils are really friendly little guys are actually diurnal as opposed to nocturnal like mice, so they'll be awake during the day unlike a mouse. Just like with mice you have to get more than one, because they are social. They're also usually handled more so you can get them from Petco or Petsmart and expect them to be friendly. I used to breed them and they are great little guys.
I'm not sure, if that's another chain place you might want to ask if you can see them first and handle them a little to make sure they're not terrified of people before you buy one. Otherwise it's probably fine!
Around me I have Benson's Pet Center and a few other small ones owned by community members. Your best bet to find yours would be to look up pet stores in the yellow pages and you should see all of them in your area. Then you can call and ask if they carry mice because not all of them probably will.
Make sure they aren't going to sell you two of opposite genders, or females that have been in with males because some places will do that and then you'll end up with tons of babies. You want two males or two females that have not been kept in with males.
Thank you so so much, you have been a huge help!![]()
One of my room mates had two pets mice in college and boy did they stink! it seemed like no matter how often she cleaned the cage, they still stunk up the whole apartment!
Gerbils are nice pets and they don't really stink. My brother wants a pet and I keep trying to get him to buy gerbils. They are pretty low maintenance as far as pets go, and you can still hold them and play with them.
Even rats stink less than mice! But if smells bother you, I would probably steer clear of small rodents.
