Anybody setting today 9-20-09? Or close to it? Newbie Hatcher here!

JestersEye, that's wonderful for your first hatch in a homemade 'bator!

I love watching them wriggle.

Between my schoolwork and the kids' we forget completely about the eggs for hours at a time, then turn them when we think of it. I aim for at least 3 times a day.

I went ahead and candled them again (on their sides, Shelley,

) last night (Day 5). The two lighter-shelled ones and the bigger green one have distinct veins and a tiny embryo. The small green one is hard to see inside, but the air sac has shrunk relative to the first candling, so I'm calling it good for now.

faerielady, the jam sounds delicious!

How is everyone else faring?

I candled yesterday thought I would get rid of the empty ones..All seem to be good except my Marans I can't every see anything so I just leave them.. So far looking ok..

I held off on disposing of any non-developing eggs so far, although I feel confident that 5 of the 18 must be duds, for sure. I wasn't sure of a few when we candled on day 6 because the shells were too dark or dense or something to see through them very clearly. By day 12, however, I was able to see veining and chick movement in two of the "questionable" eggs. I guess I can go ahead and remove the 5 eggs that aren't showing any signs of developing by now, though. I think I'd certainly see something in them at this point if they were viable.

I set 23 various colored d'uccles eggs on the 18th, and as of now there are 21 that are still doing good!! 1 developed a blood ring (blue mottled egg from 1234muki--ebay) and 1 was a no-go (mille fleur from Camelot Farms). The ones from CF were testers, so I'm very happy with the results on them. I am totally surprised on the d'uccles from 1234muki! I have gotten silkie eggs from her twice, and while they didn't do too bad development-wise, they weren't 100% developers either time, so this is a welcome surprise! I just love the d'uccles, they are the sweetest birds!
I also set some of my ducks eggs at the same time, and they all seem to be doing good too! Only 13 days left (on the d'uccles), I can't wait

ETA: I just went and checked them again, and another blue mottled egg has a blood ring

So I have 20 of 23 eggs left. Hope I don't lose anymore!

I just set silkie eggs from her too!! (9-23) Tell me, what colors did you get and how did the birds look quality - wise????

I had a terrible hatch! The eggs were 6+ each of buff, cuckoo, and white. First time I had none hatch. Second time I only had 2 hatch, 1 buff and 1 cuckoo. The buff had light skin at first, but it darkened by the time it was 3-4 weeks old. The cuckoo had light skin as well, and only 4 toes per foot, but that's expected. Other than that, they both looked very nice! I think part of my problem was that I got them in like January or February, I didn't have much luck at all with shipped chicken eggs over the winter. Now her eggs are so expensive, I just can't afford them!

She has gorgeous birds!

Well so far so good, still using the LITFA technique and just checking the temp on the bator/rotating the eggs quickly a couple times a day.

How's everybody else faring?

We have a broody Delaware who started setting sometime the week of the 12th. Of course she picked a weekend when we were out of town so we aren't sure which day she actually started. We are expecting them to hatch sometime the weekend of th 4th.

She is sitting on 13 eggs. We candled at 10 days and 12 of the 13 appear to be developing. The eggs are all hers and our rooster is 1/2 Delaware (we think), so these chicks should be mostly Delaware.

Good luck to everyone!
