Anybody want to hatch with me? Day 19

woke up this morning with 1 plymouth brahma hatched - we saw a orpinton brahma hatch and lots of pips in the other eggs. Wow, what an Easter

Out of three eggs one baby hatched yesterday on day 23 , the babies in th other two died some time befor pipping. The one baby didnt try to stand at all yesterday, he is sooo tiny (banty) today he is trying to walk, I took the tape off his feet that I put on yesterday cause his toes curled. Now if I can get him steady on his feet instead of stumbleing around like a intoxicated sailor we may be ok.

Home from Easter at Grandma's to another dozen hatched, more pips and more waiting. This is exhausting!

Congratulations on the hatches! I keep saying, its a miricle. The fact that anything is able to be conceived, and the 2 things meeting begin growing cell by cell to form a eye, ear, feet and toes. Regardless to what it is, human, bovine, chicken or fish. You can read the genetics and understand the biology of it all, yet its still a miricle.
We are truely blessed to be part of the growing of a life.

This is one of my babies that hatched with the rest of yours, what is your opinion?


I think I have a blind chick! It does not run like the others, does not eat or drink. I've been giving it yogurt and cream of wheat several times a day. It will not flinch or blink if I bring my hands up to its face. The loud peeping was driving me nuts, so I placed this chick under a berry box with the sides cut out of course, but I have found it standing up, beak resting in one of the small openings on the bottom, sound asleep. Weird. I cannot get it to bend down to drink. I just hope that nature will take its course.
What do you folks think? I put out the question but nothing to my knowledge. I guess I'm wondering what you would think the issue is? This chick walks stiff legged, kind of on its tip toes if its moving with the others, or when its trying to get away from me while feeding it.
What do you think? And what would you do?

I don't mind a blind bird but yours may have other neurological signs, with the posturing, not bending over (balance?) and walking on tiptoes.

If it were me I'd keep nursing it for a week and see where you're at then. If it's just blindness the wee bugger should begin to adapt. If there's more going on it will become more pronounced.

Yes, today I put him/her down. The size difference and the beak turning ashen and like a blue vein showing around the edge of its beak signaled something more going on. It was getting weaker and smaller, I believe it was something more, but I swear I just wont hatch again. I've got turkey eggs in and I just won't bother hatching again, to much loss and heart ache.
