Anyone cook for their dog?

I cooked for my dogs for a few months before switching to Halo's Spot's Stew (Salmon Recipe).

I don't happen to remember the exact recipe, because I'm kinda drunk, but the ingredients were...

pearl barley
canned salmon
frozen peas & carrots

I googled a lot and found a lot of conflicting information on the ideal ratios of carbs, protein, and fat and made a spreadsheet to calculate my recipe. During this process, I also played around with using chicken breasts and eggs.

My dogs never looked better once I started giving them home-cooked meals, but then I found that the Halo food was just as good and saved me time.

We cook a large batch of food every week for our dogs. It's usually the same basic ingredients with a few changes here and there to keep it interesting. Each batch contains:

Brown rice
Rolled oats
Ground flax seed
mixed veggies but no corn and fresh is better, frozen will do. Never canned though, too much salt
chopped eggs with shell
cooked ground turkey or chicken, liver, canned salmon de-boned, elk steak or ground...whatever we can get for a good deal...most often it's ground turkey

Cook your rice, meat, eggs, then mix with the rest of the ingredients in a big mixing bowl. After it has cooled I put it in gallon ziploc bags, or small ziplocs if we are traveling to a dog show or somewhere else we might take them overnight.

We do give them kibble as well, so they get a half and half mix of kibble and our homemade dog food.

I've been doing this for several months now and the coats are shiney and they LOVE the stuff, never ever even a single grain of rice is left in the bowl.

Yes and no. My dog has mostly a homemade diet with kibble out as a backup. However I do not cook it. Dogs are designed for raw meat and bone and they do fine on a diet like that. It's not complicated. Just feed a mix of raw parts to equal what would be found in whole prey. They don't need any grains so I only include grains if trying to put weight on a sick or malnourished dog. It's debateable whether they need any veggies but what they do need is best pureed in a blender or food processor not cooked.

You need to fatten them up first!

I dont have a dog but I am currently baking peanut butter bread for my chickens. I found a recipe and followed it except for adding a lesser amount of sugar and no salt. I know they like bread as a treat so I thought that adding peanut butter would improve the nutritional value.
