Anyone do bonsai?

Quote:
I love them when they're shapely. Too many people in my area let them turn into shrubs! Irritates me immensely. I tell DH we should go around our neighborhood and offer to shape up their trees. His answer? "Ummmmm..... No."
So I guess I'll work on mine and hope someone gets the message!

Took me a long time to find a sapling with potential that didn't cost a small fortune!!!

I've been wanting to try my hand at Bonsai..I'm thinking of ordering one from Breck's..It's only a couple dollars so I wouldn't feel bad if I killed it.. Even tho my intention would be NOT to kill it...Deb

Nice trees I like the dwarf pomagranate forest with the fence.
I hope to see more pics they really gave Me some ideas.
Japanese maples make nice groupings I have a bunch of seedlings that I never grafted they are just green but I might make a forest on a big slab of limestone.
I have some 6ft. Japanese black pines that will go in the landscape I have not started shaping them I never seem to get around to it so that will be a long term project.

Hi Deb,Bonsai is fun I had alot of trees when we lived in South Florida but the tropical climate is almost like cheating everything puts on caliper so fast, up here the maples hollies and pines grow so slow in comparison.
where is Breck's and what can you get for a couple of dollars?

Hello..Been trying to find my catalog..Brecks is a plant catalog company..I've ordered flowers from them off and on throughout the years..They have a shrubby looking tree..Says it's a good starter..And I believe it was 2.99 or 3.99 plus shipping..I added one to my order and now I've LOST my catalog..

I looked at their site, but you have to order by item number..

Where is the best place online to get trees if any..I'm in Arizona..We live in Mohave Valley but the summers are scorchers here..So they'd be indoors then..In Oregon I used to have 64 potted plants and flowers..The first time we moved to Arizona I lost all but 6..Made me SICK...I'm hoping with our taxes dh will make me a greenhouse so I can garden year round.. Any tips will be appreciated..Deb

I tried it once when by dd & sil gave me one as a gift. But, well, it was kinda like.............well........................watching the grass grow.......................veeeery slowly................veeery, veeery slowly.

I think it's safe to say I just don't have the patience....

Yes send more photo's. From the pic's you sent it looks like you have been doing bonsai longer than 5 years.

Deb, thats a shame the plants died, it must be hard to go from a place where you have so many choises in beautiful plants to grow to such a harsh climate.
One thing that might help is to visit a local nursery and get some ideas from them. with the bonsai using plants that are adapted to the local enviroment will make it easier to keep them alive, if you can find plants at the nursery that are root bound and dont have good shape for the landscape they may be perfect for bonsai and you can get them at a reduced price.
