every1 incubating did this happen to anywhere else as withing the last few days of the second week my temp seemed to jump up so i had to do more then a half of circle turn on just to keep it at 99/100 degrees is this because the chicks inside are taking up more mass so they are cfreating their own heat and dont need so much extra heat put in to them so the hea tin bator rose? if you know the answer then please let me know thanks

Okay, I am due on the 12th but am having some issues candling...I think I've looked at all the pics and hints about how to tell if they are fertile or not. I am so confused

I have no clue what I'm looking at...I can't tell if the embryo is moving or not...I still can't tell what a bloodring is and I can't post pics because both cameras are broken...

I think I'm having info overload....or maybe it's because this is my first try at incubating. But I really wanted the 2 Silkies and 1 Silkie X I have in there!!!!

Well, I bought a new strong flashlight today and candled all my eggs.
I found that out of about 48 I only have 18 that have chicks. I did purchase mostly inexpensive eggs because I didn't want to try with expensive eggs again, but I would have thought that more would have been fertile.
My bantam favorolles were all infertile except for one. What a disappointement because they were the only expensive ones I bought.
My brahmas were about 1/2 fertile, my silver wyandottes were about 1/2 too.
The cheapo barnyard cross eggs were mostly duds except for a few bantams.
Oh well, at least I have 18. I did see chicks moving in the light colored eggs. The dark eggs I really couldn't see anything. They looked almost black.
I can say, that if the eggs is mostly clear with a roundish dark area in the middle, and there are no dark "spots" then the egg isn't fertile.
Also if the contents sloshes around in there (moves around) it probably isn't fertile either. There is a difference between the whole thing moving and the black spots moving.
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. The link was awesome. I'm going to wait another four days and candle again. I have an LED flashlight so I know it's bright enough, I just need to have the pics on the computer right next to me I guess!!!!

Bock Bock - I have read that you do need to turn the heat down around the middle of the incubation because the embryos start to generate their own heat. So that sounds just about right.

Loved the milk hollow site - thanks!

I FINALLY (thanks to all of YOU) figured out how to candle my eggs!!!!! I took an old lamp, a cardboard box and a blanket and set it up. I figured out earlier that 2 eggs were not viable(weeping) so that put me at 8. I just candled(it's day 8) and I have 4!!!!! chicks!!!!!!!!! I am so "EGGCITED"!!!!!!

I saw them bouncing around in there and everything...I am OFFICIALLY addicted to incubating and hatching! I CAN'T WAIT TO DO THIS AGAIN!!!!!!!!
