Anyone else freaked out by the Emergencies/illness section?

actually... what freaks me out is how people don't bother to do any research before they post. If they bothered to do research first they wouldn't have the need to post!

Yes between this section and the predator one, it makes one wonder if chickens ever live to old age. I sometimes think a few of these "illnesses" are just the case of people with too few chickens and too much time spent worrying about them. Like a parent with their first baby that is sure every sniffle is a major illness. I used to see it with tropical fish people as well. The biggest danger is that it leads to needless and over medication.

Many times new chicken owners are afraid and their birds are in crisis at that immediate moment so they are just desperately searching for help.
I posted myself when I first got baby chicks and one got sick-I had no idea what was going on-I was VERY grateful for the folks that tried to help me out.
The BYC community has been a tremendous asset to me in many aspects of my chicken raising adventure.

I agree and disagree with this statement (at the same time).

My agreeing part says ... doing your research is important as is understanding what you are getting into with chickens, the problems, the solutions etc etc. BYCers will answer even super simple questions that would be quicker for the poster have searched the internet for, so are we actually hindering them by helping them?

My disagreeing part says ... sometimes there's too much information available, often contradictory, and when that happens the best people to ask are people who have chickens. BYCers are a great source of information with lifetimes of experience and knowledge, why encourage people to turn their backs on that knowledge?

We are not schizophrenic

There is an easy remedy for the freak out. DONT GO TO THAT BOARD!!

I know its like driving by an auto accident you can't help but look, but to save your sanity don't go there, unless you absolutely have to.

That board definitely has and serves a purpose....it just freaks me out once you start reading some of the really scary "death" posts. One person losing 3-5 birds a day, plus a bunch of other species.....

I have used it a few times myself as well....and I have helped a few people out when skimming through. But yes, that board and the predators board always suck me in and then freak me out. LOL

It doesn't freak me out too, too much. It serves as a warning to be careful though.
What really freaks me out is the predator/pest board. I've never had a problem except for one stray dog that got one chicken and never came back. I guess I've been lucky but sometimes it seems like danger lurks in every corner...is the wire secure? Are those coon tracks? Who has been in the garden and are they going to go from vegetarian to carnivore if they get a chance? I even eye up my old fat cat once in awhile....he looks at me like "sheesh Mom. Stop being paranoid. I'd rather have kibbles and yogurt. Those feathered things are too much trouble".
Every thing that moves might EAT MY CHICKENS!!!!

I scan through it and try to help out if I can, though my knowledge in that dept. is severely lacking.
Once thought that keeps running through my mind every time I read it lately, borrowed from the human medical field - when you hear hoof beats think horses, not zebras. In other words, don't let your mind jump to the most disastrous and deadly of diseases when chances are good that it's something simple and easily treatable. (Note: I am talking about individual birds w/symptoms, not a whole flock dying at once).
Just MHO.

I rarely go to the predators section at all.
