Anyone else freaked out by the Emergencies/illness section?

Being new to chicken raising, I had no idea that so many diseases existed for chickens! Honestly, I think that I will try to stay away from that section. Otherwise, knowing me, I'll start seeing symptoms of some deadly disease:/

It doesn't freak me out. It makes me grateful that I've been so careful and so fortunate.
I'm also very grateul that the section exists. It was very comforting when my MF roo got munched on by a dog. So I do try to comfort folks if I can.

I do try and help out on other threads, when I can. But I often find myself frustrated when people set themselves up for issues by no quarantine for new birds, or by insecure coop/run set-ups.
If you leave a door open all night every night, then YES, its YOUR fault the chickers got munched... Don't get mad at the predator!!

I open hawk threads with extreme tredpidation....
And am always grateful when its NOT a red-tail in East Tennessee!

I do get my feelings hurt when a homeopathic remedy gets slammed in favor of high-tech chemicals or antibiotics. I swear, folks want to nuke first and ask questions later.

Actually, if you look at all the posts that long-time members like speckledhen add to this forum, you will find that folks like her have been invaluable contributing members who have helped thousands of other members over the years. speckledhen, like many other experienced chicken folks, cruise the Emergencies/illness section to provide help and assistance. This comes at the cost of "freaking out" over the volume and types of problems people are having. It really is overwhelming at times, but luckily for us these great members forge on through and continue to help us!

Many thanks to all of you experienced folks who slog through all the awful stuff in that section and keep on trying to help.

Hi! Not much can freak me out.
Mostly, reading that forum leaves me feeling helpless because I don't know how to help.
It has been educational, though, and I do appreciate the folks that are able to offer assistance.

I've been very lucky that I've never needed more in my 'chicken medicine cabinet' than Sulmet, wormer, and a can of Blu-Kote.

I am a newbie chicken owner of two weeks and it is somewhat freaky but carefully picking through has helped educate me in hopefully taking good care of my girls.

*raising my hand in trepidation*

The only time I ever make it to that forum is from clicking on a recent post displayed on the BYC front page that wasn't clearly an emergency/illness post from the partial subject line.

The first real freak-out I experienced was when I learned gape worm was spread by the parasite in worms and slugs, and I stopped being thrilled by my girls going after earthworms. It didn't help when I searched on the 'Net for information on gape worms.

So I don't go there except by mischance. Same for predators and pests.

It's all relative. When you take into consideration that BYC has 60,000 members, and those members probably have 5+ chickens each... that's a LOT of chickens! Also keep in mind that many peeps will only come by to post when they find out their chickens have problems. Hang out at a busy public hospital for a few hours and you'll start feeling like the end of the world is approaching "Gosh there are a lot of sick / injured people in this city!!!"

We too have been very lucky over the years. There were a few times we had to cull our hens because of some really bad problems (like our hen that had prolapse) but overall things have been good... and we don't really baby our hens and let them free range, do and eat pretty much anything they want.

With that said, it's always good to be careful and prepared to the degree that is best for your flock and for you.

The illness and predator stories don't bother me NEAR as much as those who feel they have to post every single animal abuse story they find. Then they pretty it up with a title that lures you in and suddenly you find yourself in the middle of something you just don't need or want to see, read, or hear about. If you feel you must post a horrible story state that in the subject line so those of us that have enough nightmares don't accidentally read it!
