I didn't think the Silkies were going to hatch after all this time. There is one that looks like a quitter and one that might, possibly still hatch. Then I have a nest with 6 other fertile Silkie eggs due the 17th!! So I'm real excited. Silkies are just so very cute and adorable!!

are those chicks the silkie and the other one the same age i didnt know silkies were that much smaller, can they get trampled in the bator if i have like 39 other full size chicks in there?

I don't know guys, this has been a miserable hatch.

Strangest thing I've ever seen was the only 2 white silkie eggs out of the bunch. They pipped very well & strong thru the shell, but as soon as they did that, both welled up with blood (not water, large amounts) & they died quickly (within seconds). Like a horror show. Vein problem? Other ideas? About an hour ago I decided I had to go in. I removed the one living bitty to the brooder. He is loving it in there & we are loving him too. Removed the dead eggs quickly. Two brown eggs partially pipped early this morning but had been struggling thru the (now dried) membrane since then, not even a beak showing. I lightly touched them with warm water. One is now happily zipping along the sides. The other one is still trying. If he hasn't made any progress come morning I'm going in...done it before & HATE IT.

Glad to read everyone is doing better then me!

sorry to hear summer it just means you have to set more eggs thats all, just more enjoyment, its not like you werent going to set more anyways, but look at the good rather then the bad as the bad you can not change anything but the good which is you have atleast one chick you can make it the happiest chick ever and i am sure it will make you so happy too just be optimistic whats done is done you can not change the life of those already dead eggs but you can change the life of the chick you already have well good luck with the rest

The bigger one hatched on Sunday night and the little one hatched this morning (Wednesday). They are basically the same age. The first Silkies I hatched were a little bigger than this, but these are very tiny. So far they seem to do well with the other surrogate chick and their Mom. Of course I am not sure how they would do in a brooder. You always have to watch out to make sure the bigger ones don't pick on the smaller ones. I don't have a lot of experience with chickens yet, so maybe someone else will have some good advice on hatching many regular sized chicks at the same time, with smaller Silkies.

I'm really sorry about your Silkies! How sad!! I am sure that was a bit traumatic for you. I wish I knew what to tell you as to what went wrong. It does sound like the vessels were absorbed or whatever it is that happens to them as they begin to pip and zip. I hope your others hatch out well for you.
