anyone else hatching on the 26th?

How's everybody's eggies doing as of today? I had to stop the auto turner on mine yesterday.

My eggs are incubated on their sides, I noticed one of the eggs had changed it's position, went from aircell end being elevated to small end sticking up higher. Decided to candle to see what was going on and found that either....
1. The membrane had partially detached and lallowed the aircell to move into an abnormal position on one side of the egg.
2. The membrane has totally ruptured and the gosling is now laying lenghtwise on the bottom of the shell.

As of right now the gosling is still alive. It looks like everthing inside the shell is "free floating". Tilting the egg causes all contents to move to the lowest side/end. There is also some bloody streaks on the inside of the shell that don't move (like some veins have ruptured and stained the shell). The gosling definately isn't trying to hatch yet. I listened to the egg and didn't hear any pecking noise.

I've proped the egg up a little so that the majority of the empty space is where the aircell should be. Hopefully, it will be able to move into the correct position and hatch.

I have candled and with the 52 that I started with I have 43 growing, there were 9 that were clear. I am so excited that they are doing so well so far. Three dozen of them being in mail transit for 6 days made me wonder if they would be viable. Really excited about a week from today when they start their last little journey to poping out into the real world. We did have a power outage on 10 of the eggs for about 2-3 hours but I think they are OK. I did not have room for all in my incubator so had sent 10 to my son's and lightning put out the power. Good luck to all.

Mine are under a broody, so I have different complicatons over here. We started with 10 eggs (welsummer, ameraucana/EE, b/b/s/ orps) purchased from a local seller, so no shipping involved.
We are down to 4 or 5 good ones?

I lost 3 of them 2-3 days after starting because my dog took them! My dogs are wonderful with the chickens and when I placed her broody box outside the pen on the ground, I didn't realize dogs ate eggs. A few days later, I found a cracked egg - I tried to seal the cracks with glue and placed it back under her - it broke. Yesterday, about day 11, I found a broken egg under her and another cracked egg (with a big circular area on it). I candled all the eggs - all developing nicely. Even the cracked egg had a live chick in it. I couldn't bear to just let the chick die, so I put wax all over the broken/cracked area and placed it under a 2nd broody that isn't sitting on live eggs yet (that way if it breaks, it won't get all over the other eggs. I'll transfer it back to the first broody in a couple days, if it looks like it's going to make it.

Her nest is filled with shavings and after the first cracked egg, I put a towel under the shavings. After these next ones cracked/broke, I added crushed leaves, hoping she'll leave those between the eggs and not kick them away like she did the shavings.

Edited to say: I just went out to check on the cracked egg. The wax held up, but 1/2 the egg now had cracks all over it with some chunks of eggshell missing - no way that it would ever survive. After determining the chick was dead, we opened up the egg - I can't believe how well formed it was after only 10 days - we counted its toes and it even had feathers - so sad.

After starting with 12 mille fleur d'uccles, I had 1 clear, and 1 that quit early on, and still have 10 going strong! They get moved to the hatcher tomorrow! Will do one last candling when I move them tomorrow night!

My candling flashlight broke, sigh. So, I have another coming from amazon tomorrow and a back up coming next week. I'm sick of not being able to see in there.

And my next batch are due the 26th Partridge Rocks and a few BR/PR... then the 2nd chicks and poults, then the 10th guineas. I dunno about the found eggs. LOL.

Somewhere in there and then the next set of eggs comes the end of the first week of June. I may have Ione hatch those for me. They're PR/PR Cochin. They'll have the complete pg I need for my PRs.

Having some temp fluctuations in the bator. I'm hoping I haven't killed them all.

Broody eggs should hatch Thursday. She's dutifully hunkered down out there. I haven't candled hers so I have no idea how things are going. They are all shipped eggs, so if I get 4 of the 8 to hatch I'll be happy.

Incubator eggs are on day 17. As of two days ago three of the 16 were suspicious, but the rest looked great! We'll see what happens. Fingers crossed!

hi Pat, Ive got 32 buckeye eggs due to hatch on the 27th. I've got them in 2 bators, one at home and one at the university where I work. They were due to have a scheduled power outage last weekend but it got potponed till this saturday and sunday (day 17 & 18) so I'm having a serious AAARRRRGGGGG! moment.

My plan is to wrap them in a blanket friday afternoon and sneak them into my office, which will have the bator unplugged for about 10 minutes, then on Monday I'll have my son's teacher open up the center for me Monday morning whisk them back in and then take them out of the turner.

To top it off my 75 year old mother is visiting this weekend just in time for the chicken rodeo

Don't wrap the bator.

Read this:
Info on power outages during Incubation.
From- A Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow

The more valuable your hatching eggs are, the more likely it is that the electricity will go out during incubation. If you have an uninterruptable power source (UPS) for your computer or other electronic equipment, consider disconnecting the usual equipment and using the UPS to power your incubator. If the outage comtinues beyond its capacity to keep your incubator running, or you don't have an UPS, open the incubator and let the eggs cool until the power goes back on.

Trying to keep the eggs warm is likely to cause abnormal embryo development. Furthermore, if you close the vents or wrap the incubator with blankets in your attempt to keep eggs warm, a greater danger than temperature loss is oxygen deprivation. Developing embryos use up oxygen rather rapidly, and the oxygen level may soon fall below that necessary to keep them alive.

As soon as the power goes back on, close the incubator and continue operating it as usual. The effect of the outage on your hatch will depend on how long the power was out and on how long the eggs had been incubated before the outage. A power failure of up to 12 hours may not significally affect the hatch (except to delay it somewhat), especially if the outage occurred during the early incubation, when cooled embryos naturally tend to go dormant. Embryos that are close to term generate enough heat to carry them through a short-term outage.

Yay! Three are out! Mama broody has hatched out three of her eight as of this morning. Thankfully I am at work all day so I can't spend the day pestering her!
As of 9am we had a blue, a black and a splash ameraucana. Fingers crossed on the remaining 5 eggs. I'm hoping for at least one more out of her lot (these are shipped eggs so a 50% hatch would make me happy!)

The incubator is on day 18. I transferred everyone to the egg carton and upped the humidity. When I left the humidity was at 64% and the temps were at 100.5. I really hated to leave the darn thing alone all day. It has proven to be somewhat tempermental with the changing air temps. Hopefully all will be well when I get home.

I'll post pics as soon as I get them!

Of my sched. PR hatch all ten I kept for the bator are going - lots more under the two broodies. And the one I removed from a broody to check is at exactly the same rate of growth so those are on sched.

Of the six bourbon red eggs due the 2nd, one was an early quitter, one is odd and the other four on a normal sched.

Of the found odd-colored PR eggs - only one shows veining so I found them early and they'll be in June sometime.

One of the double yolkers is going, and one didn't go. It should be due the 1st or 2nd.

And all the guinea eggs show veins! They're due the 10th.

All in all a good rate of starters this time around.
