Anyone else keeping their ducks "All Cooped Up" because it is too cold for them to "Play Outside" wi

Why do i get the feeling it's warm.. :p That;s too bad you have an injured one, what happened?

Thanks so much. Captain Nemo is doing great. He antagonizes my dog to no end and got a faceful of teeth the other day. I posted a thread here:

It's funny, Nemo seems to really be enjoying the extra attention -- baths in the tub, hand feeding, etc. -- and has been very sweet since he got hurt. I thought his bad behavior was just hormonal, but maybe he just needed more attention? Going to try that for awhile and see if it helps. I've tried everything else. Nemo's bill (which has two new holes on one side) is healing already and he isn't having any trouble eating. Should be fine.

As for the weather, it is honestly colder in my house than it is outside! This is why I pay stupid money to live in SoCal. Right here.

Why, Miss Lydia...... 11 degrees sounds almost downright *balmy* in the U.S. right now!

Amiga, not quiet as balmy where you are at 5*.... and with the wind chill I bet it's a lot colder than that!
I don't even know what the wind chill number is* . . . I do know that to keep Cat Ion from killing birds, I accompany her outside. I am happy to report that she has not spent more than five minutes at a time outside today.

*okay I looked. -9F. Sitting here near the wood stove. Nice fire going. Brought in a couple more armloads of firewood today. Afterglow to the west is beautiful, like a watercolor in quiet grays and tans.

Ah, the wood stove - sure feels good on a day like today and I don't care how much wood is gobbling up! I have a pot of water with some balsam fir and pine twigs on my stove to give the house a nice aroma.

X2 on the sky.

balsam fir and pine twigs sounds so smelly good. I just use plain ole essential oils in my pot of water. I don't think we have balsam fir here anyway. we have spruce and pine though.

Ya'll got any Fraser Fir close by? It is very similar to Balsam Fir and grows naturally in spots in your mountains (higher elevations).

We do have Fraser Fir yes, so I'll have to get out the ranger and go up the mountain looking to cut some twigs. We have pines too.

Well, actually my mother is a native Virginian and I was born in an army hospital in Virginia. Dad married Mom when in the army and returned to New York State upon his discharge, bringing Mom along and subsequently "Yankized" her. I have been told that I can claim dual citizenship (but not by any of my Virginia cousins!)

aw, yes i briefly recall that thread. Glad he is doing better.

You guys are making me sooooo jealous! When its cold outside, all we cityfolk do is bump up the thermostat.

Your homes sound so beautiful and just, well, homey.

A quick survey of ponds in my area show no signs of waterfowl whatsoever. However the local Mallards who did not migrate have taken up residence in a little creek that branches off from the Des Plaines River. All are healthy and look happy. Three even took to the skies this morning to fly to the lake across the street. Temps at the time were 7 below Fahrenheit. This is in Wheeling, Illinois,USA.

At last check (7 p.m. CST), the Chicagoland area has risen to 0 degrees...first time above freezing since Sunday night.
