I was 7 when I got my first chick. My cousin and I got them from a family member, and we were playing with them in her room, with our barbies and everything all over the floor. My cousin reached over to grab something and squished my baby chicks head with her knee, by accident! I was devastated. But we should not have been unsupervised either.
The next time I raised chicks, I was 10 and I was old enough to know better. Two died unfortunately but, the one that lived was my "Big Mama" (in my avatar). Wonderful experience!
Which is why I thought it was going to be easier introducing chicks to my boys. But... no. They are not allowed to interact and if so, supervised with distance. They help me with their food and water prep though.
