And work slowdowns, and empty steel mills and auto factories, and last winter's intentional sabotage of NYC snowplowing.

All management (or should I say LACK of management). Interesting bosses making millions complaining about someone actually doing the work making $50,000.....neither management nor workers own the companies.

Those of us old enough remember how things were before unions. NOT good for workers as I have a friend dying of brain cancer due to working conditions in a non-union shop of the 50-60's. Of course the company files BK so the money men are untouched....america's legal profession at it's finest....

While some unions have too much power, without unions, we would still be country of slave labor without a guaranteed home/food.

That would put your friend at about 80 something, and you can guarantee it was the horendous workplace conditions, back then....Did you tell him to call 1-800-Ask Gary?

I know at least ONE Wisconsin teacher that should be fired straightaway, for more reasons than abandoning his or her job

That was probably written by some of those conscripted students, which those brilliant teachers had mentored.

Oh Lordy.

ON, we agree on lots of things (I like tag teaming on some of the ag threads); alas this is not one of them. Teachers do work very hard; so do lots of other people. The bill is not cutting their bennies, they are just asking them to pay more of their fair share. I don't think 12% of healthcare costs is outrageous; when I had a job that provided health ins I paid something like 20%. At the moment state workers pay 5%. This is all taxpayer sponsored, so in no way is the increase out of line.

We're out of money. Can't keep raising taxes to pay for fatcat union boss demands (Doyle did this in his last budget). Unions have their place, but they have become such a monster than you can't even talk of replacing abysmal educators without them calling down fire and brimstone. It's time to find a balance. Were I a state employee, I would choose paying in more for bennies than mass layoffs.

The Unions had their shot and got greedy plain and simple and now are reaping their folly. There are many laws in place that protect workers and are adequate for their health and protection and yes you can thank Unions for that. What Unions want now is like a 300# first grader more and more to keep it fed and trust me Unions can use a diet. The Union that once carried my trade has long since died and the last union job I worked on was lower paying than the non-union pay at the time. The only Unions that are alive today are there because of slush funds and public contracts that were gotten through political buyouts. Getting hired by a Union has been for the most part a family affair where a no good bum of a son or daughter gets a job because of dear old Dads connections and skill is second or a distant third and the same goes for public work with a few exception as the buddy gets hired over the qualified and all we have to do is look to the Postal "Service?", UPS or Fed Ex beats the pants off them I mean what is the shelf life of a stamp these days?

I am glad that we finally have someone with the guts to take on the Union fat cats. This kinda reminds me of the J. Edgar Hoover days. You read all the time in the news about Union corruption and greed and people going to jail. Now we have Dems on the lam, now " that is funny no matter who you are".(Larry the cable guy)

In Oregon they are exempt because they are considered a critical service. I agree that teachers work hard and should be paid accordingly but getting rid of the "dead wood" is the problem.
mom'sfolly :

Again I ask...if union busting is so important to the budget, why are fire fighters and police exempted?
