Anyone else receive INFERTILE $70 Black Copper marans Eggs 12/2008?

There is DEFINITELY something going on. It is bad, too. I am not downplaying it AT ALL.

I haven't bought any eggs or chicks in probably 3 months. They have been fighting this for nearly 2 weeks. The marans have finally started to recover. I have lost 2 cuckoo marans hens. I am left w/ only 1.

I think it IS laryngotracheitis! The symptoms are EXACT! How did they get it?? I haven't brought in any new birds or eggs. How do they transmit it to birds clear on the other side of the property? AM I carrying it on my clothes? I am literally bleaching my hands and arms after handling the birds in each pen.
Oh...I feel sick to my stomach. Poor things.

I am going to read more...just read the symptoms. Thanks so much for posting that LS link...I was going to start another thread about their beign sick, but hadn't got there, yet.

oh dear--everything points to this ILS. It says that antibiotics have no effect against the virus. If that is the case, than how have the ones that got sick with it first, getting better since I started them on it?

Where can I find this vaccination? I need to get it fed-exed before I lose my whole flock.

thank you guys...thank you so much.

Try First STate Vet - they have many vaccinations: http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/

I'm
very sorry you are having such issues with your birds. I know who you are referring to, and I had the SAME issues getting ahold of him, and he got extremely snotty with me when he finally did get back with me (I ended up contacting Bev Davis: http://bevsmarans.com/ who was able to contact him for me). I asked for my money back. As much as I wanted his eggs to add to my current stock, there are others who I'd prefer to deal with who are way more professional.

Also, cottagegarden is right; there are fertility issues, but DON'T confuse fertility with hatchability. They could have all been fertile, but just didn't hatch. They are two completely different issues.

I wish you the VERY best of luck!

They were infertile. There were no bullseyes on the yolks of 10 of them

Going to firststatevet, now.
Thank you

Antibiotics have no effect what so ever on ANY virus. In the human world, doctors will prescribe antibiotics to a person to keep underlying (bacterial) problems from affecting a weakened body. But, the antibiotic will not touch the virus.

It is the same thing in the chicken world. The chickens that are recovering have fought off the virus. The anitbiotic will not hurt the chickens, but it will have no effect on the virus they have.

Keep up the good work and best of luck.

Thank you Enola. If they have fought it off, will they still need to be vaccinated? And if they are vaccinated, should I wait until everyone has faught it off? Esp if it is a live virus vacc?

your hugs are most appreciated

You won't see the bullseyes after they've been incubated for even just a few days.

It is too late to vaccinate these hens now. They are already carriers. This may be hard for you to hear....

But, if they were mine, I would butcher them and start over with all new stock.

Your hens will carry the virus and shed it for any new chickens that you are planning on getting. This means that if you sell any of these hens, they will carry the virus for the new owner's chickens to catch. Thereby spreading the disease . . .

You have all my sympathy. I dread the day that something like this happens to anyone.

Sorry for the bad news

I had a feeling someone was going to say that. What about the little ones. I have chicks that are starting to show signs, too.

I am SO sorry. This could happen to any of us. Lots of flocks lost in Texas this year due to viruses.
