Anyone else TV-free?

Halvey, I would make the case that the Internet is very different than the TV because TV is passive watching while the Internet is interactive.

I grew up in a house without a TV, and I read a lot, then and now. But I have to say that watching golf on TV is very relaxing for my hubby after a hard week of work.

When we got chickens, both of us agreed that watching the chickens was definitely more entertaining than anything on TV.

Anybody listen to Public Radio shows?

I have not owned a TV since 1998. Occasionally I will go to someone's house to watch a major sporting event (Cowboy game, Superbowl, etc), but I don't miss it one bit.

I'm cell-phone free, too. I keep telling everyone that I do NOT want to be available to them 100% of the time, and they do not understand. I also see people going out to dinner, and they spend more than half of their time together talking to OTHER people on their cell phones. Fer-git-it!

So Im not the only person out there! We still have a TV, but no cable. And its amazing how many people think were crazy, just cant understand how we live without it!

We never watched it, so couldnt see paying the bill. Its still more of a dust collector then anything, but once in a great while we do watch a movie or so.

Oh...and the tv surveys...Not only do they drive me crazy, its like they dont belive that I dont watch anything. I wont go there though LOL.

We get our news from the raido, which seems to give awhole lot more then the TV news!

Ok....Ill shut up now <grin>

Barely.

But I see your point. I'd make the case you can spend more time watching a computer (say You Tube) than regular TV.

We just have broadcast TV, and a terrible dial up internet. So, pretty much unless we REALLY want to get online, it doesn't happen. I do my surfing at work ;-)

I'd make the case you (and your kids) can get into a whole lot more trouble online than passively watching broadcast tv.

Halvey, this is an interesting conversation. Personally I rarely watch YouTube on the Internet, and if I do, it's less than 5 minutes because a lot of it is uninteresting (to me). I guess how someone uses the Internet can vary quite a bit. I almost always use the Internet for research or communication with friends and family -- both require a lot of interactivity. The entertainment value of the Web is there, but living on a farm there's so much more interesting stuff to do outside, it greatly lessens the need for entertainment, which is a sentiment it looks like a lot of BYC share as I read through this thread.

chickenannie-
I agree. I've been on other forums where they do the "no TV" poll, and by far, this is the one where more people reported not having or not watching.

it's always been my contention that TV is for bored people who don't have anything to do...perhaps that really is the case!

As a mother I can honestly say that I just don't have time to watch it. We have 5 TV's in our house and I'm not sure why. Our TV is on in the winter but once warm weather comes everyone is outside. We hardly watch it in the summer months.

We have one TV but no cable; just rabbit ears. We all gather for the Biggest Loser on Tuesday and the kids watch Saturday morning cartoons, but that is all. Oh, and we have Saturday night movie night but that is a Netflicks rental...

Funny, but we have three TVs in our camper and only one at home! (and we never watch TV in the camper!)

Personally, I think both are overused. Sure, this forum is great and useful, but many message boards are pretty much bickering just to bicker.

I just used You Tube as an example of people watching TV, but saying they really aren't.

It's almost as silly as the gamers who say they aren't watching TV. That's another issue I guess - why anyone would buy a video game to pretend to play guitar beats me! Why not just buy a real guitar and learn to play!!
