Anyone ever raised a Turkey only to find they could not eat it?

I have only egg-pet birds but have thought about doing meat birds in spring. Then I was inspired to raise a handful of turkey but got to thinking that I would probably not be able to eat them. With just a few birds, I would probably look at them as pets in a few short weeks.

Anyone else "pardoned" their Thanksgiving dinner?

I'm having that problem with my chickens. Can't even get my husband to eat the eggs!

You raise them and give them to me.
I'll see they have fun at camp. Freezer Camp!
I've never had that problem. Don't understand it.
Meat birds in the brooders. Turkeys running the yard, they are fun to watch.
But come a couple of months from now......
You know their purpose, enjoy them, give them the best life possible.
Enjoy the nourishment they provide you and others.
One more thing....
Don't write their names on the freezer paper!!!!

Thanks goodness no one in my family has a problem with the eggs. As much as I love my girls,I don't need any more pets. I do enjoy chicken TV and love to see them "talking" to me and each other.

I was hoping that if I did about 50 cornish this spring,there would be too many to really get attached to and the work and smell would really turn me off of trying to make friends out of them. I would really be in trouble if I did not have the heart to get them processed. I definatly would not process them myself. I found a place nearby. I really don't need 50 fat birds as pets.

Don't tell me that. I just bought 2 turkeys intended for the freeer. Although they do have personality.

How long does it take to raise a turkey from chick to plate? I was thinking about getting a single turkey for our 2009 dinner plus a few meaties for next summer (my mom would freak - her broken-record reaction whenever I mention it is "you don't want to do that").

get like 15 turkeys and let them run the yard because in my brillant mind I would save on feed..well,I saved on feed,they picked off my flowers in about 5 seconds,(they are now fenced in,the flowers I mean) they decided to roost on my car one night,so now I have to buff out the scratches,they crap like a herd of cattle,they run up on the road after the mailman..so I have decided I will take delight in taking off the heads,and learned my lesson,I will stick with the chickens and pheasants..I am going to start next week,dont care if they are small,they will still be enough for a sandwich,BTW,anyone looking for a pair of RP from a show breeder,they really are nice and I hate to do them in but I will..

I only hatched a single Narri last year and it turned out a Boy. We decided he would be good for Christmas dinner.

This picture was taken March 22nd of this year. Needless to say, He was not Christmas dinner.

This pic was taken the day I gave him up to a new home. Very hard day for me. His tail feathers were broke from being caged for the first time for travel. He was also missing a large area of feathers on his right chest from trying to mount the dog. Yo-Yo went to a home where he would have a 'willing' Girlfriend of the same species.
