Anyone ever read this?

pips&peeps :

Just not feasible where I live and you can get drifts over four feet high in a couple hours in the winter. Frostbite is also an issue when it gets below -5 too.

When I first saw these houses I thought the same way, and we don't get drifts up to 4' but we can get alot of blowing snow, thats why I'd do the south side of mine and add an over hang.

I do open air always. The only thing closed up is my brooder room because I usually hatch all year around.
It gets 100 degrees here with 100% humidity for a few months during the summer and in the winter we have 25 degree nights, wind blowing and snow on occasion.
I lose more birds in the summer due to heat than in the winter due to cold. I run fans in the summer and give cold water with ice every day but the birds and me like the cold weather better.
Sorry if you don't like photos. I am more visual than descriptive with words. If you would like to see more photos of my housing set ups visit my website and go under the Housing link.

It may snow into the tractor but as long as the wind is blocked they do very well!

I like your photos, thanks for sharing. This is my 2nd year with chickens 7th with ducks, and one thing I have noticed is it doesn't matter how cold it's been or snowy most of my chickens come outside during the day. The small bantams will sometimes stay in but even they go out. I think I really had the idea that you had to keep them warm like other domesticated animals when they do just fine in housing like you and JackE have.

Still waiting on my book must be coming by wagon train..

but in the mean time if anyone wants to show pics of their open coop setup, we'd love to see it..

Maybe the chicken is trying to cross the road to deliver it to you?

Very first post and very first venture into chickens or a coop.

My DH decided one day last week that we needed chickens and that he was going to build a coop (he works in computers and has never done anything with wood in his life)
So off we went, we didn't have any plans and had not yet found you guys, but we had decided to do what I have since learned is a fresh air style coop. I have no idea if we are doing anything at all right. AND as of right now we don't have a chicken anywhere in sight.

So far it hasn't fallen over on us

We live in the PNW so our weather is pretty mild. We might get a handful of days below freezing every year but for the most part if it snows here it melts the next day. Rain is our biggest thing.

Here are the pics of what we have done so far. We are planning on using the clear plastic (wavy) roofing stuff for the area above the front windows and the roof. I will cover the top part up to the rafters with more Hardware cloth. I am making the run in sections so that we can just screw each section together do to the uneven ground. (and we will add an apron to the whole thing when we have it up.

Please tell me what you think (gently LOL) and if you think that it won't work please tell me why so that I can explain to DH the reasoning behind the problem.

These will be our nesting boxes (they are an old shelf I had in my pantry)
