I had an australorp go broody last year. She was a very good mother. But, I understand, it is not common of them to go broody. I have a Buff Orphington that loves to go broody. As do the Millie Fluer's. I have heard that Silkies are very good broodys as well.
Yes leaving eggs in the nest can make them want to set,just like taking eggs away will encouarage them to lay more, for intstance, Back in the 80's when I raised peafowl normally they would lay 4-6 eggs befor setting, I would take the eggs and they would lay 12-15
Yep I agree with ya. I keep some bantam mix breed around just for that. With in the last 2 days I had 3 hens go to sit cause I left eggs in the nest for them, the eggs have been in the nest less then a week. Now I need to decide what eggs to put under what hen. .............ed
