Anyone expecting chicks this week?

I seriously doubt you will regret it, they are fantastic.
We don't eat many eggs in my house, but even though we have to give the eggs away by the dozens my family enjoys the chickens so much, just watching them is a lot of fun while pottering in the garden, and guests who come over to barbeque are fascinated by them (doubly so if we serve something made out of them, like homemade devilled eggs). So even if you don't eat the eggs regularly they're still pretty fun.

We do eat eggs regularly - more than 3 hens will be able to supply, as I have a teen and a spouse who between them use 6 eggs a day in their packed lunches alone! Plus we make homemade mayo here.

Then you will be in heaven! I had a silkie flock last year and I always heard they were mediocre layers - not my girls! I never had less than two dozen eggs on the countertop and we always had more than we knew what to do with (my family does not eat breakfast). They did make the best baked goods though, and devilled eggs!

My little chicks are so cute and so happy. I hope everyone else gets their chicks soon! IMG_20190424_121612721.jpg

No chicks today. We'd ordered the chicks way back, said not until after April 8th, as we had to get the brooder plate. They eventually called us and said we could get them on the 24th. We went in last week and said wait, that's a Wednesday, are you sure about that? Because you told us you usually get chicks on Thursday? They said oh yeah. So today we were there - no new chicks for us. They *had* gotten in turkey poults, and the delivery guy said he didn't have the invoice for them, that would come tomorrow with the chickens. So hopefully tomorrow.

Prolly just as well the few chicks they had were a good bit older, or I might have tossed out my planned breeds and just gone home with three whatever! Getting impatient.

Me too! I'm anxiously awaiting tracking info! I have 15 SR bantams coming from Valley Farms Hatchery including 3 Easter eggers, 3 mille Fleur D'uccles, and 9 OEGB. I got a shipping confirmation on those guys last night.

THEN I also have an assortment of LF coming from The Chick Hatchery. They were also scheduled to ship yesterday but I believe TCH is a drop ship company so they're awaiting tracking data from the source. They did respond very quickly to my email, but they said they don't yet have tracking information. From them I ordered:
3 buckeye pullets
6 Easter egger pullets
3 light Brahma pullets
3 GLW pullets
3 BJG pullets
3 Appenzeller Spitzhauben SR
3 dark Brahma SR
I sure hope at least one of each SR breed is a pullet, but especially the dark Brahma since they are available sexed. Well, actually I also hope for more than 1 pullet out of 9 OEGB lol. The bantams were kind of an afterthought lol and VFH was one of the few places that still had any available for this week by the time I ordered. I didn't want them to be younger than the LF because after I'm sure everyone is healthy I hope to let them all live together.

Brooders are ready and the PO has my phone number, and I'm obsessively checking my emails!

Quick update, everyone arrived midday Tuesday. I got the tracking number for The Chick Hatchery shipment after the PO called, and Valley Farms wasn't able to find the tracking information, though they did email to tell me they were trying to sort that out. I told them I had the birds so they could stop looking. :)

Everyone seemed bright and energetic, but we did lose a TCH buckeye overnight. A few others looked droopy today, one EE bounced back really fast after some NutriDrench, one light Brahma died this afternoon, and one bantam Mille Fleur D'uccle died this evening. Working on one more droopy EE. There were 42 total, as VFH sent 3 extra bantams. TCH didn't include extras and apparently didn't have dark Brahmas, as instead of those they included extras of others I ordered.they shipped from MO so I'm guessing Cackle. Once I've got these guys settled I may need to look for some dark Brahmas elsewhere though. There was no advance notice that they weren't coming, although it was noted on the packing slip. TCH was very quick to respond to all of my emails and refunded this afternoon for the difference between the price of the dark Brahmas versus the substitute birds and the buckeye pullets who died within the 24 guarantee window.

My chicks from Meyer hatched and have shipped! Anyone else waiting for their chicks this week? I would love to hear about what you're expecting and see pictures when they arrive!
I'm getting a lavender orpington, a crested cream legbar, a blue laced red wyandotte, and a dominique. I was originally going to get them in 2 weeks, but they had all of my breeds available today so I nabbed them! The dominique was an impulse addition this morning. If one dies I'll still have 3 and we want 3-4.
They can arrive anytime between Tuesday and Thursday, but I'm going to guess Wednesday. We'll see if I'm right.
I had a DOA when I opened my box of chicks this afternoon. :( It was terrible.
The rest are doing fine but it was so sad to see that little one in there dead.
There was no heat pack and that made me very angry as these chicks were definitely too cold when I picked them up.
