I read in a new book that I got for Christmas that it was good to feed oats to laying hens. I was going to go and get some tomorrow. I have 19 hens 2 turkey 2 roos & 9 chicks in the coupe. How much should I feed? I plan on just throwing it to them like scratch grain. I can get a 50lb bag for $6.00 at the feed store.

Make sure you get rolled oats or you will have hulls everywhere!

I mix oats in with the layer for the ducks and geese and give it to the chickens like a treat.

It is supposed to help keep them in better feather.

Oats are a staple for gamefowl. If you buy whole oats, just soak them over night in water and they will work well.

I know we aren't supposed to eat stuff from the feed store..hehehe..
But I will boil up a pot of the unrolled oats and have a bowl for myself.
It's a nice warm meal for the chickies too

Rolled oats do not have hulls and are flat. I cook up a huge pot and add scratch. I put it in containers in fridge and feed my girls warm oats every AM.

sorry for hijacking ................... cuda,, what do you feed your game?,, i have a herd of chicks bout 2 months old,, they get game starter, mixed with game conditioner & maintenance, and 3 grain scratch,,, all this mixed together. i give mine oatmeal,, lol,, but just a handful once a week or so.

I also feed my girls oats every morning.

Sometimes I mix in their yogurt too.

I buy the rolled oats so the husks are removed and because of the terrible cold we have had here lately, I do a plate of porridge for me every morning and one for the girls too.

It is a great treat for them and maybe I am daft tomake it warm but it salves my conscience, even if it makes no difference to them, they love it.

We treat with rolled oats as well...along with BOSS.

Before we take them to a show, we'll hand make a mixture to keep them calm and happy:

hamburger meat, rolled oats, and wheat germ...we pinch it into little bite-size pieces and they LOVE it!

I freeze some so we always have some on hand.
