Will you terrace my yard??? I live on an old apple orchard, and I have the slope for it!

I would imagine that you probably have ample stone, on your property.....In reality, if you terrace, the top terrace is the only ground which doesn't get severely disturbed....The total advantage, is the elimination of erosion.

Each wall must either be wide enough to resist the pushing of the soil, or buried deep enough, to do the same.

Royd,

NICE WORK !!! You can still use a tiller IF you get one of those small ones...Mantis-Tiller or the similar one that Honda makes. I think that Stihl also makes one of the small ones. They LOOK very handy. I may get one myself...sometime. I've got one of the "big" Rear-tine tillers...heavy bugger...but easy to use.

P.S. When I lived in Colorado, I tilled a 16x25 garden area of clay. I mixed in a pickup load of sand and lawn clippings. Then, in Fall, I tilled in a pickup load of chicken manure....and let it sit fallow.
That Winter, we got a LOT of snow....There was NO Snow that stayed on the garden area...AND you could lay your hand on the soil and FEEL the HEAT !!! CHICKEN MANURE is HOT !!! I had a great garden the following Spring/Summer !!!

The only problem is that I have an invasive grass, called Maidencane and it loves the dampness of the terrace....It multiplies on runners, up to 2' in the ground and the only way to hold it in check, is to dig it out, about every other year....There's no stopping it, because one rhizome starts the whole mess all over, again.

Royd,

I've got the same problem...sorta. But mine is called "bindweed"...It's a relative of "Morning-Glories". Cain't kill that stuff.
I used to spray it with 2-4-D and later with Weed-B-Gon...it dies back for a while ...but you never can get rid of it.

Now I just cut it with a hoe and put it in a 50 gal. barrel that I burn. It survives..but doesn't hinder my garden much.

MAYBE Chickens would EAT that Junk early in the Season before I transplant my seedlings?....Ha-Ha !! (nuthin' grows THAT early!)

mr. birdaholic :

I plant a 40'x40' garden every year....... then, hay season kicks in, so I don't have time to care for it, & alot of stuff turns to chicken feed.

Yeah, that's the sad thing.....Unless you have hours a day, to dedicate to a summer garden, in Florida, it's a waste of time, because the weeds sprout and grow so fast, that if you take a two week vacation, you won't even be able to find the garden.

Speaking of salsa, in the last couple years, Chinese Laterns have seeded themselves in my garden...Relative to the Mexican Tomatilla.......Absolutely delicious...Spicy and sweet, at the same time, and one plant will produce about 300 marble sized fruits......And they are one of those prolific weeds.
