Oh the rare pixeliated melons! I hear they're not much on taste though, just pretty to look at, sort of a modern queen anne's pocket melon......

Another question... does the water melon have to be planted on a hill? or is if fine growing flat. Now I have to down by the bay song stuck in my head lol.

I think "hill" is a reference to planting several seeds in a group; doesn't really mean hill, at least the way the term is used around here.

I've never been able to get one to eating size; those moths lay eggs in the vines and kill the plants; never found a way to defeat them. Finally gave up. Can't even grow cucumbers for the same reason. This year they killed my zucchini plants in about a week. I think I attract them; next door the cucumbers did fine.

Did you really have to do that to me with that song??? (Yes, kidding!)

O, that makes since sort of. I think that there are 3 seedlings planted together. Hmmm I haven't seen any moths around, but we are able to grow cukes and squash. lol sorry bout the song.

Yep, a watermelon hill is a set of 2-3 plants that are allowed to sprawl. I plant mine in sets of 2's and redirect back to the "hill" as needed.

In CA we don't get vine borers, bit I seem to remember daily vine inspections mentioned on the garden forum but those who did, I think they had to locate the hole and use a pocket knife to cut out the larva before it killed off that arm of the vine, but again this is from memory. For the moths we do get here (hornworms, my son considers them his mortial enemy) I use a bug light zapper at night, hanging in the garden (specifically above the chicken run). No hornworms found yet this year, also no moths found, but I suspect that's because the hens wake first.

I wonder why they don't just say that lol. I was thinking that they needed a hill lol. I haven't seen any bugs near the garden, we planted sage, mint, and marigolds around the border to help keep them out. The only bug problem I have are these red bettles that eat my lilies, I forget what they are called but if you put a few of them in a jar they make a screaming noise it is really strange.
