I once had a pediatrician (when we were away from home) who was upset that I did not take a rectal temperature, but rather took an axilliary (under the arm) temperature. He read me the riot act. I already knew that the rectal is more exact, but EVERYTHING I have ever read has said that the exact degree of a temperature is not as important as whether it is a high or low fever, and whether it responds to fever reducers or not. My regular pediatrician was fine with axilliary temperatures, and actually preferred that temperatures NOT be taken rectally. Oh, and he has been certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics for 25 years, and is a member of one of the most well-respected pediatrics practices in the Phoenix East-Valley area.
