Anyone had THIS happen before? Hen Laid 2 Eggs Today!!

You know what? I was coming on here to say the exact same thing.

This morning as I was getting the kids ready to go to daycare, Florin (one of our 3 Australorps) was in the coop making a heck of a racket, with the other two girls outside looking really nervous and agitated. When I checked a few minutes later she had laid her first ever egg, a decent size, nice hard shell, perfect in every way. About 45 minutes later she was back in the coop making more noise, but I had to go to run an errand, and when I got back about an hour later a second egg was in the nest!

I'm almost 100% certain they were both from the same chook, as Florin has recently had her comb turn bright red and upright, and her wattle got large and red as well. The other two girls are still looking very small and pale by comparison. Plus Florin has been really vocal all day since the eggs were laid. They were all purchased at point of pay about 6 weeks ago.

I can't weigh the eggs because a toddler wrecked my digital scales, but they are the same size as the free range ones I got from the supermarket sold as "large", so I'm guessing they're around 48 - 50 grams each.

How is it possible for two eggs to be laid within the space of an hour?? Perhaps one was "stuck" and was sort of pushed along ready for laying once the other had formed? My partner described it as "a double yolker - but with a shell for each yolk" LOL.

I have a Campine that occasionally lays 2 eggs in a day. Usually one in the morning and then one later in the day. She is my ONLY white egg layer, so I know the eggs are hers. I figure they just were in the path at the same time.

wow it's really interesting to hear everyone's stories! and i thought i had a one of a kind chicken! i knew hens occasionally lay twice in a day (i had another OEGB lay what i believe to be her first two eggs, and a leghorn a few months ago who laid twice in a day, too) but it was always one in the morning, one in the evening, not together! to anwer everyone's questions, she is five, yes five years old and has hardly laid an egg in her life until just this summer! also, by "push it out" i mean the egg seemed to be stuck, i could could just see the tip of the shell, so i pressed gently on her abdomen to help the egg come out. as i said it was very large and misshapen and probably uncomfortable to lay so she might have become eggbound if i didn't help her. thank you so much for all the quick answers, always knew my old english was a rather, ahem, "special" bird lol here's a pic just cuz

Hi,
I am new to keeping chickens, but have tried to read up as much as possible to give the chooks the best possible care. We only bought 2 pol blue marans last saturday. Unfortunately, we haven't had a great start and one had a dirty red raw bottom then became very lethargic, so we took her to the vets who has perscribed 2 weeks antibotics for her, which seemed to have an immediate improvement. The vet wasn't particulary helpful but did say that they are underweight, so i am trying to fatten them up (not for eating). I have managed to get rid of the lice using a powder and I think that they will probably need worming, but I am waiting for her to complete the course of antibotics so they don't conflict. Now, this evening I watched the chicken (who is NOT on antibotics) lay a shelless egg immediately followed by soft shelled egg!!! (It has laid small but normal eggs before now) I'm beginning to think that I'm jinxed when it comes to keeping chickens - having learnt the hard way, I wouldn't recommend buying chickens from a auction. The chickens are free to roam around the garden and I feed them scraps. I have added cider vinegar (especially for chooks) to the water, they have access to layers pellets (which they don't seem to be keen on), mixed corn, layers mash, grit & oyster shell. When the chicken (which is on antibotics) gets a messy bottom, I wash it off and now it doesnt appear to be as red or smelly and the diarrohea comes and goes - the past 3 days have been really hot. I have now put the oyster shell in a seperate container. This is the first time I have used a site like this, so sorry to have 'gone on a bit' but we would really appreciate your help. Thank you so much.

Thats funny, my barred rock just laid her first 2 eggs within 10 minutes apart! I too was a witness. Hard not to be as loud as she was. Both eggs were small but ni flaws!

Awesome!! I have an EE, Saturn, that will double lay!! She's a busy girl!! Lol and the two she lays are beautiful!

I noticed she was laying an egg so i stayed to watch. She laid a perfect little cream colored one, then sat on it for a minute and then got up and laid another! This egg was really bumpy an misshapen and big, i had to help her push it out. This can't be normal in any way, can it???? In all six years i've had chickens i've never seen this happen!!!!!!!

My Isa brown did this today (8/21/2023) and the way you described the odd-looking one is just like what I got--strange shell texture and shape. This thread is old obviously but I was just now searching to see if hens laying two eggs the same day is "normal". I checked nests by 12:30p today and each in this flock had laid an eggs. The last two days each of my 10 Isas have laid an egg. Today I found 11. The hens had pecked it open by the time I found it. They do not normally peck their eggs. Must have known something was "off". The yolk was abnormally large. The dog enjoyed it.

Here are pics of the Isa egg that I found today. The Isas are about six mos. old. Eggs are mostly medium and we occasionally get a large to extra large. The shell was also thin in comparison to the other eggs.

PLEASE ACCEPT MY APOLOGY!!! There was a decoy egg in the mix. ONE OF MY HENS DID NOT LAY TWO EGGS AS THOUGHT. I've never made this mistake before and the hens' eggs are now close to the same size and all are brown. I can usually tell the difference by weight--the wooden eggs weigh less. I count the decoys and sometimes the hens roll them out of the coop because THEY are smart. We were short one because I put it in the basket. Ugh! I feel very embarrassed. So sorry. 🥺
