You know what? I was coming on here to say the exact same thing.
This morning as I was getting the kids ready to go to daycare, Florin (one of our 3 Australorps) was in the coop making a heck of a racket, with the other two girls outside looking really nervous and agitated. When I checked a few minutes later she had laid her first ever egg, a decent size, nice hard shell, perfect in every way. About 45 minutes later she was back in the coop making more noise, but I had to go to run an errand, and when I got back about an hour later a second egg was in the nest!
I'm almost 100% certain they were both from the same chook, as Florin has recently had her comb turn bright red and upright, and her wattle got large and red as well. The other two girls are still looking very small and pale by comparison. Plus Florin has been really vocal all day since the eggs were laid. They were all purchased at point of pay about 6 weeks ago.
I can't weigh the eggs because a toddler wrecked my digital scales, but they are the same size as the free range ones I got from the supermarket sold as "large", so I'm guessing they're around 48 - 50 grams each.
How is it possible for two eggs to be laid within the space of an hour?? Perhaps one was "stuck" and was sort of pushed along ready for laying once the other had formed? My partner described it as "a double yolker - but with a shell for each yolk" LOL.
