Good Evening Friends...just to give a short update...we started with 9 Silky eggs (3 whites, and 6 reds, all purchased from "My Pet Chicken " and shipped by usps Priority mail. After candling on day 3 we found one not developing. and discarded by the end of week 2. Everybody else looked good with nice aircells and good vein development upon candling.
By day 21, all had pipped and hatched except for 2 white Silkies who pipped and hatched on day 22. One of the red Silkies died on day 21 and upon exam, found it to have an enlarged belly which was soft, and an unhealed umbilicus, but no foul ordor. Can anyone shed some light on what could have cauded this babies' demise? I have read up on the "mushy chick disease" but remained unconvienced at to ther cause of death in this particular chick.
We disgarded one egg that showed no developed at all by day 14, and all remainining 7 eggs have hatched by day 22 into happy, healthy, vibrant little Silkie chicks, 5 red,and 2 white. I will post photos as soon as photo bucket is up and running. Each red chick has different dark markings such as chipmark marking or striped running down the back, etc. Will these marking remain or be replaced by the grown up feathering? I'd appreciate any info, espically as it relates to idenytifing roosters and hens from each others.
Hurray to 7 healthy chicks, a 77% hatch rate, by our estimations. Please correct us if we are wrong...as we get into old age. math skills seem to be the first thing lost. I will post pics of our beautiful new fluffer butt babies as soon as we get photo bucket figured out.
Good luck to all you friends out therel.
