well the "real" candler works. even on ee eggs. out of 29 eggs i removed 8, 6 are iffy and the rest are good to go as of now. i really thought i wouldn't have any develop since i have been having trouble with the temps. also 1 has a small crack (only visible on candling) but it has veins and a black spot. should i keep it???

I have 8 of them, blue and olive. In order to see in to them I turned off all the lights, even the incubator, and let my eyes adjust to the darkness, then I shined the brightest LED flashlight that we have into the egg. It was still VERY dark, but I was able to make out blood vessels and movement, but I can't identify the eye or any other parts, just the wave motion going on inside the shell.

Definitely keep it!! I don't know if it's kosher or not, but I heard that you can seal cracks with wax. So I sealed my cracked egg with drops of candle wax. The baby was still alive the last time I checked.

As I sit here there is a flurry of activity from my family who is busily setting up a nest box camera so we can watch my broody hatch her babies. I can't wait to see this.

I'll be hatching a bunch around the 10th. Either LF or bantam barred cochins - I have both and I don't feel like getting up to look at the 'bator, lol.

I've heard of eggs cooling down for several hours and not having a problem hatching.

Well today I finally got enough time at school to candle all the eggs. I only had to remove 5 eggs, 4 were from my own mutts and were likely infertile and only 1 was a maran given to me by another BYCer. When I lifted it out of the tray, it had a small hole in the pointy end of the egg! Wierd because it wasn't there when I put them in... I guess it could have happened when I transported it to school Monday.
I still have 10 Maran, 1 olive egger, another unk, then 19 eggs from my own. Also the 4 BR turkeys and the 2 that one of my students brought in a few days ago. Those two don't have anything going on in them that I can tell but its still really early for them. I'll give them til early next week before I pull.
So I guess we have 31 chicken eggs and 4 turkey (not counting the 2 from my student: seriously not counting on those). The other two teachers that did hatching last year all came to me telling me their horror stories about chicks either not hatching or hatching and then quickly dying. They each just went and quickly bought chicks and put them in there for the kids.
