So, I take it there was no power outage from that tornado watch! Congrats!!

No, but now, we're having thunderstorms and are fully prepared to take emergency measures with my eggs! Every dang time we incubate, we have weather issues. The UPS that the computers are plugged into has already beeped, an ominous sound, for sure! By the middle of May, we will have no eggs in bators or chicks that need heat, thank goodness, and I don't plan to use those incubators for a very long time!

Speaking about easy to candle eggs, my Belgian D'Anver eggs are so super easy! They are the tiniest ones I've ever seen or incubated but there is no mistaking what's going on (or not) in them.

Mrs Ford - You make me want to hatch Leghorns just for the candling fun of it. Don't know what I'd do with the chicks though

I have no desire for leghorn chickens. I'm sure we'd fall in love with them too.

SpeckledHen - What do you do when you lose power? I've recently read about using gallon jugs of hot water to keep babies warm in a brooder and just refresh the hat water every few hours, ever heard of that?

We have a generator that has a little gasoline in it. That's what we used during the long outage last time. We also have a fire in the wood stove, so we could move the eggs close to that. I'd rather just have electricity, LOL! For quite some time after this hatch, my only incubators will be broody hens. I really shouldn't need any more birds for quite some time, though, providing this hatch continues as well as its been going up till now.

I've heard of the water bottles, but our well pump is electric, so no hot water if no electric. I've used those disposable hand warmers, too.

that reminds me of one time when we lost power when I had chickies that were only 3 days old. They were crying real bad and I figured they were cold. Not knowing what else to do I took them and popped them into my sweatshirt kangaroo pocket. There were only 3 of them, so I carried them around like that until the heat came back on.

It was sweet, but smelly,

I think I'll try the disposable hand warmer next time, that sounds easy!

Really GOOD idea. Just saw some when moving stuff from the motor home into the travel trailer! Will go out and get them and bring them in! Hubby is going out of state, north, to work for six weeks. Snow forcast for where he is going today and he is leaving tomorrow. He can just buy some of those if he needs them....will save them for the babies!!

It's a great plan to have those on hand for emergencies!! I have a chicken emergency box in my cabinet. I'll be adding a couple of those to it.

We don't have a generator exactly, but we do have a power inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter of the car. If I needed to I could pull the car up to the window and power my incubator and my cpap machine.
