I have 42 eggs in the incubator. 23 buckeyes, 3 mixed banties of some sort, and 16 marans.
Started hatching one day early---today!!!! First one out was at 10:00 this morning or a little before. It is now 12 hrs later and I have 7 new Buckeyes, 1 gorgeous little banty and about 5 or 6 more eggs pipped. They are all resting and being quiet so I need to head to bed too---but I just can't!!! This is the first time I have hatched any!
I bought 3 1/2 dozen French Black copper marans eggs. Thought I could stick them under my broody hens and have good luck. I've only managed to save one out of all those and it is not a black one---IF it is a marans it is probably a wheaton one. The chick is all yellow and putting on almost white feathers now. So that is when I bought the little incubator and thought I would try some eggs that way---so I just grabbed some out of my hen house and incubated them! Going to give them away to someone who wants a few chickens---but at least I know that I can handle the incubator!!!
Am having a little trouble adjusting the humidty with the baby birds popping out. But they all seem to be doing fine once out and up. So am just leaving them alone since they are doing okay. They aren't drying off much at all--but as long as they are warm I am not going to worry. It is amazing to see the eggs get a pip and then they rest up for the grand finale! Some work hard and some work and then rest.
Is there a good way to mark a few of them? I want to mark one that is really strong and had no problem hatching---I just want to follow it's personality and see if it remains a strong willed bird. I think that would be fascinating.
Had a little old spanish lady tell me about holding the baby birds by the beak and if they fight they are roosters and if they dont fight they are hens. Does anyone know if that holds true? And how the heck would you hold one???? I'd be afraid of hurting the little thing of fluff!!!!
I did not like hatching with the first eggs I bought---said I would not hatch anymore---too many crushed, broken, smothered, and a couple were just "goofy" and weak. I couldnt handle that. But with the new incubator sitting there----I couldnt resist just trying some of my own flocks eggs=----and here I am sitting listening to the little peeps and the sounds of busy little babies in the incubator!!!! I LOVE it!!! I absolutely just LOVE it!!!!!
Big smile here!!!!!!
