okay this is what i had to do get really warm water in a bowl and gently start picking shell off first then gently start trying to take the white sac off while your keeping your fingers wet keep putting water on the whole area that you took shell off of DONT get it by chicks mouth but gently rub the sac thats around chicks head like your pelling something off keeping your fingers wet you will see it will all come off slowly and gently DO NOT take it all the way off the butt area cause it will pry still be hooked to the belly button after you get it to its feet then STOP and put it back in incubator and the sac will dry up off chick when it gets mobile. i had to do this with 2 of my ass backwards chicks and their running around eating everything they can

Thanks! He is out now and doing really super well!

On another note the other day I was posting and said something along these lines "I'm an A-N-A-L feedback checker and they wouldn't allow me to put that word in there it changed it to "picky" just now you said Ass backwards and it didn't change it... lmao

How do you tell if its a girl or boy anyway? Is it obvious when they are chicks? Maybe we will see some pictures??

Here are some pictures of the bad egg and the chick handlers. The clear area is at the large side ofthe egg. I havent noticed any movement. All his brothers and sisters hatched between last night and this morning. These pretty much went the full 21 days.....minus a few hours.

So, you can sex the barred rock now, supposedly.

I have read from a gal on here that has done many a barred rock..that you go by three things at once. The spot on top of the head, the body color..and the black going down the legs..not just one..like the spot..but all three working together.

First..the spot on the head should be more of a spot..not like some that run all the way down.
Next, the body should be a darker black, not the silvery black. Wait until they are more dry, you can see the colors better.
Then, the front of the legs should have a dark line running down the front of the legs into the feet.

Maybe someone else knows how to describe the spot on the head better, I didn't do to well.

The other's.well, you have to be a pretty good vent looker atter.

Or, wait for the egg, or the crow. That's pretty much how it works. I have to say, I have done pretty good after they have come along in age..around one week, to go by how fast the feathering comes out in the wings. The pullets tend to feather out sooner. Not always, but it seems most of the time. Also the tail feathers start to show sooner. So..maybe you can try that with the others.

Girls....tell those little girls bottom down to hold a chick! That way if they drop them they don't have so far to fall. I would just make it a requirement. (but then I am a bit of a drill sargent with my little's...DGDs) Even my 10 yo will stand there with it standing in her hand and then be shocked when the chick tries to walk off.

So....bottoms down. And the one that worries about the chick scratching....give her a shoe box with some paper towels in the bottom. And bottom down for her and she can hold the box on the floor and look at her chick and get brave maybe and pet it....just sayin'

grandma here.....lol
