How exciting!

Mine all seem to be growing except 2, which is not bad at all! I can't wait to see how many actually hatch!

Well, in my mind I can't wait, but I have my brooder full and need to come up with something to either do with the chicks in the brooder or the hatching chicks..... I will figure it out by then.

Yikes...

I have 12 Polish due on 4/6 and 12 silkies due on 4/10. I have a Brinsea Eco 20, just bought last week. I candled my first dozen today, I saw 5 out of 12 for sure with veining. I figure I will recheck in a few days. If no vein webs in 3 days or so should I get rid of them? What does everyone else do?

I have 13 BCMarans from AussieHeeler

on BYC that I picked up from her .

She also gave me a blue egg that should be an olive egger (soooo excited!!! (Please be a hen, please be a hen!!!) and another unknown white egg. Then I have 16 from my chickens which would all be a mix with EE rooster. I have BO and EE. Plus 4 BR turkey eggs that I set a week before these so they're on the same time frame. These are all in my new hovabator in my classroom (which is driving me nuts because its 20 min away!)

Tomorrow we have science (only twice a week) so I think I'll take that opportunity to candle them all!!!

Maybe I can tie that into something like a graph for the kids... hhhmmm... I showed them one of the turkey eggs the other day. We turned off the lights and I used my flashlight, then I put it under the document camera so it would show up on the screen. It worked fairly well, not great, but it was better than walking all around the room!!
I'm soooo protective of my bator in the classroom. I have it behind my desk and I even asked the custodian to not vacuum around it (fearing she would bump into it).
Oh I almost forgot! Since the class saw the eggs and bator for the first time on Monday (I set them over spring break), one of my students came in on Tuesday morning with a little gift box for me. I opened it up and there were two eggs. She wanted me to put them in the bator... I felt them and they were refrigerator cold. Asked her if she has a rooster, she does. So I put them in... Worst case senario: either they don't develop (which I'm betting on) or they do and I have to take them home some how before lockdown and put them in the bator at home...

Mine SHOULD hatch April 6 but this is my first time (except for the 4 BR turkey eggs that just went into lockdown tonight here at home in my LG).

Good luck all! I'll be watching!!!

By chance, does anyone have a really good site to go to that shows how to sex these little ones..big dot, little dot on head.

In my eggs that are due to hatch in April...yes! Seeing some veins in my RIR's from Julie..so excited about those, but, not too sure about the white marans..still. Plus, have had to throw out a lot of my lemon/blue Cochins. Man, I am having problems with hatching a LF sized Cochin..anything, frizzle or just reg. Maybe it's just the luck of the draw?
But....I have 9 other Cochins, bantam size that will go into lock down next week. Very lively little ones. And I was so scared..still am..only now for the actual hatching..they are so tiny.

do you have these in two separate incubators or do you have a different incubator for hatching?

in my first hatch, and in this one, i've only candled about a quarter to a third of the eggs.
i didn't get rid of anything at all. i would have if the egg smelled or was weaping. nothing like that on my first hatch, and so far, so good on this one.

at day three i don't think you should be thinking about getting rid of anything.

Do you have directions on how you made your bator. I have a cooling fan like the one you are using there, but was wondering how you rigged up the light and what is in the bottom, pan of water it looks like.

I have them all in one incubator. I hope I was clear, it would be day 10 (2 days from now) that I would be checking for veins again. I just didn't know if having the eggs that aren't growing would form bacteria and affect the eggs that are growing? Thanks!
