I had the same question, and just found out the answer this weekend as one of my silkie girls finally went broody. Your pretty much right though, they will stay on there eggs almost the whole day, even at night when my other chickens roost, she is in the nest on her eggs, and she gets a little attitude if I try to get them from under her, which I have to do daily because all my birds are mixed together right now, I put 2 of my shipped eggs under her last night, so I am hoping they will hatch despite of the cold weather!

You will know when they go broody. They have a very distinct growl

like back up! Stay away from my eggs!! You will loose a digit growl!! If you are still unsure, place a egg in front of them and stand back, if they bulldoze it under them, they are definately broody!! (I love watching them do that)

I'm so glad I finally had one go broody!!!

I have put a little bowl of food for her in her nest so she doesn't have to get up as much!

I put a unsual egg in the incubator last night. I seen my dominique roo (huge fella) mate my bantam frizzle cochin (tiny, tiny girl) they are in separate pens but when I opened the door to feed, well you can figure it out . . . They flirt with each other all the time through the fence

this will be a interesting bird if it develops!!

My one chick I am pretty sure is a mix between my buff silkie girl and my golden laced cochin roo, I will have to take some pics of her when I get home, really turning out pretty. At least I am hoping it's a girl!!

DH is starting to think it might be a Roo.

I bet that is a pretty mix!!

One of my eggs that hatched is a cochin, I'm starting to question baby daddy!! Its feathers coming in have a barred look to them. I though for sure my cochin roo was covering this one girl, but looks like Mr Big Boy Dominique might have got in the mix.
