Lol AngieChick, they did! My Buff outside thinks she is going to be broody but I have news for her

One, the eggs are no longer fertile; two, I can only handle one broody at a time since this is all new and three, lol well, it's the holidays and I have enough going on! Yes, Fiona is the broody one, the one we want to hook up with Gus. He's a beauty btw and I LOVE that card!!!! Did you draw that??? It's wonderful.

She is being a very good broody so far (she's inside so it's much easier to keep an eye on her), so I'm hoping that continues and she takes good care of the babies. If you are up for it, I say let's give it a try...lol even though I have no idea what it entails

Good luck with your hatch too. I know silkiechicken is hoping to come back with some eggs to put in the incubator from the red silkie rooster.

Oh and the brooder I borrowed is great but the light stopped working during the last babies. I didn't want to mess with it and screw it up, so I just put a new light in there. Let me know when you need it back!

Hmm, that's weird about the light. I may need to check the wiring. If I get chicks and my girls bail on them, then I may need it back. But, with 3 of them broody, somehow I think that at least one of them will follow through. Because the eggs are staggered, I'm going to give 2 to each of the 2 broodies that are really dedicated when I separate them and put them in my broody girl mini-coop after the holidays. My silkies are so gentle that I am hoping the babies and broodies can be together in a "nursery".

I'm hoping Diane gets some babies out of that red rooster, he is a very pretty boy. If Gus is any indication, his fertility should be good. Out of the 4 eggs that my girls are sitting on, all 4 have growth (I just checked), so the boy is doing his job.

Maybe the easiest thing to do would be to put your girl and my boy together in my mini coop for a few weeks of "special" time? After my broodies are done with it in a couple of months. Then we can gather eggs for the duration and hope for some adorable babies. If you want to host Gus, that would work for me too. They may not even need to be together for that long, and the eggs your girl lays for a few weeks afterwards could be fertile. It will be an interesting experiment, at any rate.

Oh, and thank you for the sweet comments about my card. I painted it one evening, it's a little silly.

Good luck with your hatch, I can't wait to see what you end up with!

It is weird. It just stopped working one night. I jiggled the wire just a bit and it sparked inside so I pulled the plug and decided to let someone who knows about wiring work on it. Lol my husband knows a little but I have no idea what you'd end up with when he was done

Just let me know and I will move the girls into something else. I'm always able to scare up something so a day or two notice will be just fine.

It would probably be better if I host Gus, if you wouldn't mind? Fiona does not go outside at all, in fact, after how my girls treated her, she starts shaking and crying whenever I take her anywhere near a coop lol. If Gus would be ok with her in the big cage for a bit, then that would probably work best. We'll see how she does with this batch before we commit! I seriously wish I had built a nursery into my coop but I just wasn't thinking I'd be raising chicks from my hens. I wasn't planning on keeping the rooster (which is gone now) and then Diana introduced me to incubators (evil! lol). My husband is cringing....lol.

And the card is really amazing. You did a great job!

One of the wires probably came loose, maybe during our move. If your DH wants to look at it, it would probably be a pretty simple fix. He's just not allowed to laugh at my rinky dinky wiring job

Your poor silkie! Those girls must have been wretched to the poor little dear. I admit that my silkies are in their own setup, they are just so small and sweet that I didn't trust my big girls to not mistreat them. I bet she and Gus would be fine together in her cage, if she ends up being a good Mommy. She may need a saddle if she's stuck in there with him all alone

. We could always try it, if it doesn't work I can just take the booger home. He's a pretty gentlemanly rooster, though. We've been pretty happy with him.

My nursery is actually a separate, secure wooden box with a simple hardware cloth covered door. I take it and put it in whatever run I want the chickens to integrate/or reintegrate into, just separating a section of the run out. If I get new chickens or need to quarantine one of my existing chickens it's easy enough to take some extra bits of fencing and put up a little run away from the other chickens. It's nice having the security of knowing that I can quickly set arrange a separate space if the need arrives. You should talk to your DH about hooking you up with one

Especially since you are now a hatching addict!

I should be! 15 candled in and looking good yesterday...one might be questionable, but I actually saw some veins through the brown shells so we should have something! Same hybrid Comets as before. And my husband changed out the switches and wafers on the Humidaire hatcher, and it seems to be holding temp now...we'll see what it looks like come morning, I am still fine tuning the heat regulating switch.

Oh they were, they were absolutely horrible to her. I felt so bad. Even my rooster at the time didn't like her! She is perfectly happy living inside. I have to say I will be happy when I have my happy, loving, snuggle chicken back...she's a real you know what right now!!!
lol.png
Sounds good about Gus. If all goes well with this hatch and the babies, we'll see what we can set up. I can't keep all the babies, lol so I hope you want some. I have no idea what I'm going to do with all the babies that are hatching out this time!

I'll tell him he can look at it and casually mention the nursery idea

Cool! I think their babies will be awesome too, but then again, we are prejudice, lol. She is my little darling princess so anything she does is perfect
