Anyone have a current APA manual handy?

The weights above are the weights that the birds should be at... Now they are allowed to be 20% heaver or lighter than the suggested weight but it is best to be as close as possable to the suggested weight..

As far as the "Show World" changing animals. I believe the weight for the Sumatras has been the same since 1883 (127 Years) when the Black Sumatras was admitted into the American Standard of Perfection... So if there was any major changes done to the breed it was before the "show world" started breeding them..
Now I don't mean to be a smart alec but the people in the "show world" try to keep the breeds of poultry as true as possible, more than I can say about hatcheries that breed for quantity and not quality..

Chris, I agree with most of what you have said. But also needs to be taken into account, these birds existed long before the APA admitted them into the standard.

I understand that these birds existed long before the APA admitted. But the breeders of the Sumatra back in 1883 presented the APA a working Standard of the breed and what they felt the breed should look like. Its not the APA or "show world" fault that the breed Standard is what it is today, it is the people that presented the the Standard to the APA back in 1883.

Where did you get the information that suggests "old" Sumatras were a much larger bird? As Chris points out their current standard weight was established some time ago.

That is what I would think too..

Well you figure that the ASoP gives you 20% + or - in the weight so that would mean that roosters weight could be from 4 to 6 pounds. But 5 pounds being the preferred weight..

Chris

I tend to think that the birds of past years were rather smaller that what we are showing today. Past generations did not have the money to feed the large birds that some are able to now...so I must disagree that birds were "originally" not bigger than the are now...in general.

Also RFF I do have a few LF WFBS left that are needing some improvement. I have one family left right now that I think are as good as they come! They have size and type. However this next year I am outcrossing them to others to improve vigor. For the past two years I have let myself end up in a corner with them. I hatch a ton of chicks but their vigor is so poor that they die by the time they are 2 months old. In the next couple of years I should have them going again.

Have you picked up a well bred Asil or Thai game stag? American game birds are on the lighter side, but orientals are not.

As for the Asil there are two types the Reza are the smaller sized birds (under 5 lbs.) and the Kulang are the larger sized birds (over 5 lbs.)

A better breed's to compare the Sumatra to is other "long tail"/ "ornamental" type breeds like the Shokoku, Onagadori, Minohiki, Totenko, or the Kurokashiwa.
There weights run from 3 lbs to 6 lbs..
