Anyone have a hen or eggs set for October? Join us!

That is so cute. What breed is the hen? She is beautiful.

Two more hatched this morning before I went out, and a further five while I was out, plus two in the last half hour (since I got back). So I've a grand total of 13 chicks now, and some of the other eggs are pipped.

Not bad, for Day 20.

I do think there's something about this incubator that makes them hatch early...

I'll take a picture in a bit and post it to show you.

Only one pic. Sorry!

For some reason, the camera batteries always, without fail, die on hatch day.

We seem to be having a bit of a break at the moment. I have one zipped egg and two pipped (at least) but not much has happened over the past hour or so (apart from a rediculous amount of peeping from the 'bator).

All of the black ones have white spots on their heads and white bellies. There are a couple of really pale white ones, some yellowy-orangey, and some distinctly brown. I have one quail impersonator (far right), yellow with black stripes (and brown wings), and one of the very pale ones has a black dot on her back.

I'd forgotten how cute chicks were... My family banned me from having any more chicks until September. My next-oldest are about to start laying!

I have more pics!

It took new batteries, rebooting the computer, and a couple of brief black-outs, but here they are.

One of the white ones has one black spot on the middle of her back. I would name her 'Spot', but I already have one of them (and she grew out of her spot when she feathered out, too).

My sister named this one 'Stripes'. Stripes is impersonating a quail.

My mother named this one 'Ninja'. I'm not entirely sure why. It's black with a white belly and chest, a white spot on the top of its head, and little white stripes under its eyes. There are three others that look much like it, minus the eyeshadow.

And here's a series of pics for you all to d'aaw over (I did):

Very exciting, isn't it? I can't wait to hear what you hatch out.

I had four more hatch earlier this evening, which brings the current total to 17. I think a couple of eggs are pipping, but I'm not sure, so there may be a few more chicks tomorrow. Not bad, considering I've never succeeded in hatching more than 3 out before, and it's still Day 20. (Point A - This is the first time I've used my own eggs. I'm convinced that eggs travel very badly, especially along dirt roads. Fewer fatalities when they just travel 40 metres from the chook yard to the house!) (Point B - There's something wrong/different with the incubator. It consistently hatches things on Day 19 or Day 20. Go figure).

And there's always one in every hatch, isn't there? One who sits in the middle of the crowd, back on her hocks and bottom, stretches her neck as far as she can, and cheeps absolutely as loudly as she possibly can, no matter what you do.

Yep, I have one. The youngest, thus far. Although, this is also the chick that couldn't work out how to get its head out of the egg (wings, back, legs, no problem. Head? Not happening), so maybe it's a little insane anyway...

I'll wind up my random comments now - I'm being called away by my family.

from Rachel.

ok, I'll blame it on being a newbie and this being my first batch... but today is day 14 for my couturnix eggs..

I turned them this morning already... do I turn them all day and put them in lockdown tonight? or do I put them in lock down tomorrow morning?

thanks for your input.

My current count is 2 very well developing eggs under Cricket (due next Wednesday

)
One egg developing well on day 7 in the bator (due on the 18th... I really hope Cricket will accept this one because all the other eggs in the bator were found to be infertile so this one will be a lonely baby)
And 12 eggs of undetermined development under Cocoa... She lets me take them out to candle but I cant see anything yet, probably just me not looking in the right places (duck eggs and they are due the 20th)
