Anyone have a hen or eggs set for October? Join us!

it is really up to you. Some will say leave that chick in there and never to open the incubator til the hatch is finished. Me personally I have a brooder ready and move the chick once it's most of the way fluffy and add more warm/hot water in the incubator. I've never had any issues doing that. Although 60% humidity is all I keep it at for the hatch.
Thanks for the advice - humidity the last few days has been about 65% but as soon as First born shot up to about 75% and now its at the 60% mark. Think I'll wait till bed time and have another look . Ive the brooder box ready and the brinsea hen is warmed up ready I may top up and move her over then...

*sigh* results of my eggtopsy. 5 eggs, ALL were fertile. egg 1 - developed to about day 12, egg 2 developed to day 8 maybe, egg 3 developed to about 2 weeks, egg 4 developed IN the air bubble was pretty big but not sure how far along it made it, egg 5 made it to day 18. was small but i know on lockdown it was moving around. actually yesterday it was moving around. But it failed to internally pip. I candled last night no movement. Today I candled again, no movement at all. When I opened the egg all of them had a slight smell telling me they've all been dead for one or more days.
Later today (after my doctors appointment) I plan to bleach the incubator and move my other set of eggs into it. My next hatch will be in 2 weeks (they are in a temperary incubator and doing great). Is it okay if i post their updates in this thread still?

Ohhhh Sweet, how sad, good luck for your next batch and keep me posted, so want to know how you get on!

Thanks. I didn't expect much from them, or these either. i've had now 2 batches from this guys eggs that have been failed to hatch/high bacteria. It's not the incubator but the eggs. his hens are laying them in dirt/poop nests.
I had one successful hatch from his which was 4 dozen eggs and about a 50% hatch rate on that.
This current set that is almost a week in I've already removed some eggs that had blood rings. *sigh* I don't want to say no to free eggs to incubate. and he's giving them to me free to either feed to my dogs or incubate. *deep breath* I think i'm gunna go ahead and bleach the incubator right now.

Hatch day is today..... and I'm not excited. No pips no chicks or peeping. Not even any movement.

I don't think I'm even going to get one chick out this batch.

Thank you for the encouragement.
I'm not sure if I can try again. I have a broody hen that has been sitting on the eggs for more than 21 days, and I'll feel really bad if I make her wait 21 (or so) more days.

But I really want her to have chicks. If anyone knows anybody who (or if you sell) is selling D'uccle eggs Please, please, please let me know ASAP. Thanks.

Hi!

Sorry for disappearing off the face of the earth. School went back. No more explanation needed. It's the final term, which means it's the second half of Semester 2, which is the shorter semester... so basically I've got to squeeze 10 weeks' worth of work into the next 4 weeks... which really isn't fair. But anyway, I've been pretty busy. My fault for choosing subjects that require tonnes of preparation for an oral presentation (three languages).

ANYWAY, the first two chicks hatched this evening. At least one more egg is pipped, but I didn't really look. Here they are, drying off before going into the brooder.

The chicks from last week are doing well, too. 17 of them are a week old today; three others are 6 days old. They've grown so fast (but not as fast as quails)! They have wing feathers! Where have my babies gone?

I must remind myself to set eggs in the morning in future... I'll probably get another one, maybe two, before I go to be tonight, and then get up in the morning to find thousands running around the incubator...

from Rachel.

PS, I don't think I mentioned, I set another 48 eggs last friday, so they will probably hatch around the 25th or 26th of October. 2doz are the same as these two hatches - crosses from my chooks. 2doz were given to my by a friend, mostly Frizzle eggs with a couple of Brahma thrown in too. Wow... three hatches in one month. Hmm.
