and good luck on the ones coming up. such cute pictures of the baby chicks.
My 21 are due this coming weekend. Fingers crossed for everyone.

We have some chicks due the 18th of March. It's our first time incubating. We bought a genesis hovabator 1588. We put 37 eggs in and candled yesterday. I think we're down to 26 (11 not developing). 13 of the eggs are from our own flock, and we bought 24 Marans eggs locally. I think the Marans eggs are from some pretty young Marans (due to the size), so I think that might be why so many don't look like they're developing. Also, the Marans eggs are pretty tough to candle since they're so dark. We kept most of the eggs in the incubator in case I was off on my first time candling. Do you think there is risk in keeping those eggs in the incubator that don't look like they're developing? None of them smell bad, but I don't want to ruin the good eggs by keeping bad ones in. We opened up a few of the ones that I was pretty sure weren't developing, and they were definitely not developing. Any advice is appreciated!

If they don't smell and the shell isn't weeping, they'll most likely be fine just leaving them in until after your hatch. I use a 1588 also and pull out the vent plug and take a good sniff for any sign of a bad egg each day. When I candle before lockdown, I dispose of any obviously bad eggs. Any eggs I'm not sure about, I put my nose right on them and sniff for signs of spoilage. If there is none, I just go ahead and leave them in.

Good luck,
Deb

Check out my "1st Chickens" thread for more pictures and a video.
Too much trouble to copy everything over since the forum changed. Haha

Thanks for that advice! My first hatch. I have 17 Ameraucana eggs that I cannot tell if some of them are developing or not. 6 of them definitely have chicks. One was definitely clear and I have already removed that one. I think more are undeveloped, but I just can't stand the thought of potentially taking out a good egg. No bad smells in my Hovabator and I take them off the turner to go on lockdown tomorrow. I know about blood rings and haven't seen any of those. I just don't trust my candling skills very much. Will probably be more confident once I see which ones actually hatch. I put the 'clearly there's a chick in there' eggs together on one side of the incubator to keep up with them. Are there other signs would make it an obviously bad egg other than one having a bad odor?

have u looked at the pics on the first post that show candled eggs? Clear eggs are bad. Odors are bad. weeping is bad.....andddd....No veins can be bad. But if the eggs real dark u wont see veins

I've seen pictures and videos. Some shells are dark and I don't think my halogen light is bright enough. Looks like just a light shadow instead of the solid forms. I've been sick this week and worried about handling them even with scrubbing my hands. Guess I am trying to be more hopeful that realistic. But I could probably take out some of the eggs that I can't see the formed bird with veins at this point unless it is a really thick dark shell. That's so sad, but I must focus on the 6 good ones I have. Thanks again.
