I just finished this whole thread.. having started it 3 days ago! I have learned alot. I purchased a Brinsea Octagon 20 w/turning cradle, and put 24 mutt eggs in it yesterday: March 16th at 3pm. I have 15 red hens.. I don't really know what they are, RIR crosses I think. I have a rooster that has barred rock in him, not sure what else. I have no idea if 15 hens are too much for him, but he does have a brother, and I have been switching the roos every week. Every time I have cracked an egg to eat, they have been fertile.
So, over 4 days, I collected the cleanest, biggest nicest shelled eggs, and kept them in my basement. I have had chickens most of my life, but never have I used an incubator, and hatched my own. Hoping to have a good number of pullets for layers, and some roos for the freezer! The roosters I do have are quite large, and heavy in the breast! So, heres hoping I don't screw things up too badly, don't end up having bad eggs in the incubator too long, you know, stuff I have been reading on here, lol.
Its interesting, the turner however. Every half hour its turned completely from one way to the other. I think if I were a growing chick in there, I would be sea sick by now!
Is this normal, or is my turner 'broken'?

incubation is fun but sometimes a frustrating and dissapointing process.
Theres nothing wrong with ur turner lol
Its suppose to do that.
Mine does it. But i always have soo many eggs i never use it. i hand turn all my eggs twice a day.

Good luck with ur eggs
The hens sound like production reds
Should have some good chicks out of the mixes

Welcome to the thread!!
If u have any quetions fell free to post here and we will answer them the best we can

LG with fan. Non have come out. some have made a crack, most are peeping and rolling around. humidity 49
i have an LG too. take a staw and put it through the air hole in the top and pour water into it to fill the center water channels. they could be stuck in there shells cuz to low humidity. it sounds funny but it works-- i usually get a maxi pad, and wet it, and put it in there. it holds alot of water and helps alot with humidity

ok just did the first candling 8 days into it..had 30 reg size eggs ended up with 27!!! And two banty which are good to go also!!! So now we wait!!! YAY
