Anyone have experience with aggressive dogs?

Livinzoo, you are doing the right thing! Food aggression is often taken far too lightly. It can accelerate into possession aggression, jealousy over the dog's people, and is a red flag of problems ahead. Adding dog aggression to the equation AND showing dominance/aggression with YOU is the definition of a dangerous dog.

It's hard, I know and it breaks your heart, but don't allow the failure of someone else to do the right thing make you feel guilty about being brave. Your family, animals, friends and neighbors will be safe because of your decision....and so will you.

You can find a wonderful dog out there that will complement your family and enrich your life!!!

Big hugs,
Nancy

that is crazy! how old is she?

thats soo sad! poor dog! and it goes to show you how smart she is then! good luck with her!

Wow - that certainly adds a new complicated twist to things.

What will this mean for the other dogs in the house? Since it will be difficult to make them understand the Cane's blindness problem, will you have to keep them separated? I remember you said that Sophie had had altercations with your other dogs...

Oh wow! I was totally in agreement that you probably needed to put her down before I read your last thread.... and you may still need to BUT at least you have an answer and something to work with now.

We had a 125 lb. German Shepherd/Akita mix - got him as a puppy rescue. He was the smartest, most wonderful dog. We had to move into a small apartment for three months and had a friend keep him during that time for us. But, when we got moved to our new house and were ready to bring him home we found that he'd gotten so attached to their Shepherd mix that we ended up letting him stay with him. (They begged us and he was sooo happy there.) Anyway - a year later he went blind. They learned how to live with a blind dog and their dog learned how to 'lead' him. They'd go out to their five acres and run around with my dogs cheek literally against the other dogs hip - running full speed around the place. It was so amazing to watch. The biggest thing the people learned was never to move furniture or anything out of place in the house.

So, my reason for the story... if it's possible to get one of your dogs to become her friend it might help the whole situation. Just a thought... it's a totally different breed with a very different background so ... maybe not... but?

I LOVE her photos and that big ol' face! Despite all of my bravado, I have no comment on the blindness factor, because I have NEVER encountered that twist. I can only hope and pray that what your trainer is suggesting will work for everyone! The very, very best of luck. I will be anxiously watching for your updates.

Nancy
