Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

I am so, so sorry, Stacey. The time numbs it a little but you never, ever, get over it.

My brother died in an accident 17 years ago at 34. It destroyed my mother to this day. My sister lost my sweet 17 year old nephew (hit by car) a year ago this month. I give her credit for putting on her clothes and walking out the door every day. My mom, she just gave up.

My condolences, love, and strength. You gotta keep going for those who are left Some days it's almost impossible. :hugs
Thank you so much @pitbullmomma , my heart goes out to you, and your whole family!
I'm not giving up, I'm just fragile sometimes.

Geez... I miss a day and everything happens (except catching the hen!).

I'm not sure how far this place is from you, or if it has what you're looking for, but I've been told about it be several different people. I've never been there, but it seems to be a good place to buy meat. It's in Southington. http://charlannefarms.com/
My daughter is *special* and some allergy testing came back that she was allergic to chicken (among other things that make one gasp) and we were eating a lot of turkey for a while and a woman I work w suggested going there to get turkey b/c it was freakin' expensive everywhere else.. we were basically eating a tgiving dinner ever 2-3 weeks.

My daughter has a shirt that says Crazy Chicken Lady, but I can't find it online. I'll get a pic when I go home for lunch.

I had finally caught my buff orp cockerel crowing on video & showed a lady at work. It reminded her her gpa's farm from when she was a kid & asked if I could make her a ringtone of it, though I think it would be good to use for an alarm.

Southington is only 30-40 min away, not too bad....

Amazon has a few choices.

I have a voice recording of my rooster crowing. I sent it to my girlfriend who gets up early. Told her it's the perfect alarm for her.

Just getting caught back up!

After cooking @rjohns39 lasagna recipe, I needed a full day to recuperate!

Well, that and we had family over to eat and they interrupted my Squatchin. The lasagna and the tiramisu dessert was a wild success!

Squatch Updates: I'm going to check cams again this evening. I'll let y'all know what turns up!

Question: do any of you show chickens or other poultry?

We went to the parish fair this week which hosts a poultry show. I couldn't wait to check it out because I want DD to be able to exhibit when she's old enough. Well, I did until I went there. A large number of birds (20% or more) had swollen leaky eyes! I wanted to runout of there and Lysol my family and burn our clothes!

How do you keep the birds from getting sick? Or do you just not?

I'm going to go back and continue reading to play catchup! Hope you're all well!

None of those are it.. Her dad (or should I say step-mom) got it for her & I have no idea where. It's really cute though.

I considered showing this summer at the county fair, but decided against it b/c I was worried about getting our chickens sick. The fair we went to had very few birds that weren't there to be auctioned for meat. I was surprised, but assumed that many chicken people felt the same way I did about exposing their birds.

@staceyj, I'm so very sorry, I cannot imagine what it like to lose a child to suicide.

I know it isnt always easy to put that out in the open but thank you for telling us about him. He sounds like he would fit right in here with us!

I'm going to light a candle for you, your family, and him this evening.

Y'all are loved!

Im right there with ya on the teenager.
I have 1 ( of 4) left at home and sometimes she's the dearest buddy you could ever want, other times shes shockingly mean and says such hateful things... it just knocks the wind out of me.

Honestly I'm not as strong a person as I used to be. We lost our oldest son to suicide 6 years ago. It left me with a huge hole in my heart.

Sounds like you had a full weekend..... And a full tummy!
I am glad it was a hit.

I don't show or go to shows at all. It is just to much of a risk. Hubby won't go either. He is afraid he won't be able to get out of his clothes before I start the burning part of cleansing!
Anything as stressful for the birds as a show can bring out illnesses that were hidden. Scary stuff there!

It was shocking!

I figured I'd see one or two sick birds. I did not expect half of the standard and large sized fowl would be sick! All but one bantam we're healthy.

Some of them looked like they hadn't been tended to all week!

I'm definitely writing the fair association and telling them they shouldn't hold birds there an entire week when judging is done in one day.

Thought this would be the place to share my coffee mug....courtesy of my hilarious mother.

I apologize to my mom regularly for being a little turd back in my youth.

I’m so sorry to hear about your son! I can’t even imagine how awful that must be! It makes me realize that despite the teenage attitude, I need to treasure him while I have him!
My daughter, who is 28 and has kids of her own now, used to have that sweet/mean alternating attitude. (I can remember her telling me I had PMS a few times!) Now that she is older and has little ones, she has a whole new perspective on things! Girls are bad that way, but it gets better with age and maturity.
Hang in there.....
I’m sending hugs and prayers your way!:hugs
