Gary I appreciate your opinion, but you just rained on my parade. Popped my balloon. Put a hole in my rowboat, lol

I thought we were hunting the elusive goose that lays the golden eggs, lol

Some believe in unicorns others dont. When so much hate and fright is going on it's nice to have a little fun to take ones mind off the serious. I'm sure many have wondered same, but it doesn't hurt to have hope.

And as I was so kindly reminded in a private message on BYC this is a FAMILY FRIENDLY site so there may be many children following this thread as well.

Let them have some fun too when we've debunked the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.
My kids know better than to ask about the tooth fairy, they know I will not lie...

Hey, since we're on the subject of breeds, one of my sweet little leghorns has been hoarding her eggs (we finally found them in the barn, glad she didn't go for the woods) and we only have a RIR rooster. I have no idea what I'm in for as far as the chicks. Does anyone have this kind of cross breed?
White leghorn or brown? If white, I think the chicks should be white because White leghorns are dominant white, not silver. I'm not 100% sure on that. With a brown leghorn, I have no clue. @Lady of McCamley should be able to tell you more.

She is white, great, thank you! This is my first year having chickens, So I still have no idea what I'm doing and I'm flying by the seat of my pants basically. Im a little worried to let her sit in fall, but I think the babies will be up and about before winter, so I'm letting her go. Plus I have no idea which one is hoarding, I have two identical white leghorns, Thelma and Louise, so I don't think I have a choice lol

I just had a hen hatch out some chicks for me 2 weeks ago. They are doing great. You may want to go at night and put her and the eggs in a more (if she is sitting on them). That is the best time to move a broody with eggs. Some hens horde without sitting though. I had one hen that we thought was laying on our porch because we would hear her egg song around 10am, find her out of the enclosure and on the porch but we couldn't find the eggs. When I did find them she had laid 14 in that one spot, but she was never sitting on them.

So if she isn't staying with the eggs, she's not broody, she's just, what, selfish, or doesn't like the boxes? Oh my goodness. There should be a class on raising chickens.

I just starting out myself but from what I read some breeds do not si on eggs, go broody. It's been breed out of them for egg production and / or meat birds. My two from what I read will never go broody. If I wanted chicks I would first need a rooster (just kidding) get a hen that will broody or incubator
