I think if you miss one notification, the site assumes you don't want any more notifications. I found the easiest way to see if I've missed notifications is to look at my "watched threads" list.

I woke up at 5:42 this morning. Reached for my phone and discovered I must have fallen asleep with it in my hand. followed the cord and found that at some point the cat came and layed on top of it. Didn't want to wake anyone else.
