However, it seems that the long car trip and new environment didn't bother the girls too much. Look what I found today. Unfortunately, it will be feeding my parents' dogs. I found out when I picked the birds up that the breeders use Frontline on the birds to keep them mite free. According to my research, it takes 8 weeks for the bulk of the chemical to leave their system and I don't want that in the eggs that I'm hatching for meat. The stuff in carcinogenic and even traditional CAFOs aren't allowed to use it. Honestly, if I had heard this tidbit and did my research before I got them, I wouldn't have bought them. But, I have them, they are beautiful and I'm going to work with what I got.

Yes! When people hear that we have chickens, their automatic thought is...hey, now I know what to do with my egg cartons!

Do you need some more egg cartons?

Family doesn't save them for me unless I ask. But people at work who take the time to save them I don't refuse. I keep saying I will throw a bunch out but I can't do it. Maybe I'll need them! (I did the math once and is need 60 eggs a day for something like 3 months to use them all)

It's funny... My neighbors all save cartons for me... I had a huge box in the pantry. When the girls were laying 20 eggs a day, I completely emptied the box. Now that they've quit laying, I'm storing the cartons at the neighbors' house. Here you can't sell eggs in a used carton, but you can sell them loose (aka bring your own carton).

Just stack them under the table empty and when someone says they want eggs but don't have a carton hand them one. Let them fill it... they brought their own...

Nah, we're only 4 minutes away on these abandoned little backroads. And we only have a couple of beers. It's a beautiful thing, I love my Wednesday happy hour! Breaks up the week.
