Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

I have been using the 5 gallon bucket with PVC hanging down, but with the increase in my flock I need something different. Also, my run in in a rectangular shape, so that round bucket takes up too much room. I think I will make the feeder below. Make 2 that butt up against each other.

Hello All,

I just caught up on my weekend reading. You guys have been busy! I'm ready to get back home from my business trip and play with my chickens.

My mom's side of the family is mostly Polish/irish so we would always have stuffed cabbage, perogies and many, many different potato dishes at our family shindigs.

My husband's family has an odd tradition. His mother's father and his brothers were raised by missionary parents in India during the early 1900's. My MIL was born in Pakistan where her father and mother were stationed as missionaries. So that side of the family has a huge reunion every Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving day is fairly normal as far as food goes, Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, mac n' cheese, cranberry sauce, the works. But the day after Thanksgiving they have an "Indian" dinner complete with curries, dhal, mint yogurt, rice, etc. I used to not like spicy food, but now I can handle hotter Indian food than my husband can.
Funny! I'm on a business trip now & finally have time to catch up without my partner breathing down my neck like "Are you on your chicken web AGAIN?!!"

Uh, yeah, you have your facebook friends, i have my real friends.

(Btw I still have 454 more messages to get through. It's like the novel that keeps giving back!)

This style works well. The plastic ones with the grids get dismantled by my birds and the smaller feeders like the next link end up with the clips giving out and tipping. The clips that secure the X across the bottom. Then the little metal thing is laying there just waiting to be eaten. Freaked me out and had me sifting litter looking for it.

The better style is available in smaller feeders just have to pay attention to quality design.

Since I've started this adventure, I've sent dozens of feeders and waterers to the trash. There's no end to the birds' creativity on how to destroy something.:barnie
That's exactly why I never got a 'real' feeder. I really didn't want to waste $$ on something else that didn't work.
Thanks 21hens! The breaking plastic or the bottom giving out is a major concern of mine, besides making sure my bantam doesn't starve.

I love this idea, maybe next year. My coop is 8x8 and already feels small. I'd like to do what I can to make it less crowded, hopefully getting the food dishes off the floor will help. If it goes well I'll switch to the elevated waterer too. I liked the idea of the pvc thing b/c I hoped that it would hold quite a bit of feed and I wouldn't be refilling it constantly, but it'd be awesome to just toss a whole bag of feed and let them go at it. I have a round plastic trashcan I store feed in and I've see where people put holes in that and attach a fitting, but I worry about someone getting their head stuck, plus I have 14 birds so I'd need to make sure I had enough holes so everyone can eat.

Ugh. Just saw an article about a local city making laws about backyard chickens. (There aren't any currently and people are keeping chickens)

Coop must not be more then 4' x 4' x 4'. No more then 4 chickens and no rooster.

:barnie:he:mad:
I hope people who already have the chickens can be grandfathered in. It's horrible if they can't. Can you have more than one coop? IMO if they're going to do that it should be based on the size of your property.

This is not a small waterer, but I love it and use it in my brooder. Mine is gravity fed as I don't have running water out there--but it can be connected to a garden hose as well.

I don't use it in pasture because anything elevated get's knocked down. I've given into rubber bowls (they can't break em) and kittie pools.

X2. I hope they don't mess with your birds...

My birds are excellent at cleaning out a pasture and turning it into a moonscape. Once they have a section done, I'll move the fence so they have more weeds and grass and plant a pasture mix I want in the desert they leave behind.

My winter housing has two feet of sawdust in the bottom. And they are very good at making human traps. They even dug an escape tunnel that I had to fill from the outside.

This year, I'm going to throw down some shelled corn below the top layer and see if they get better at turning the compost, rather than digging pits.

Just got sawdust for our coops and run. Well over $200 with delivery. I'm still shocked DH thinks this is a SAFER, less expensive *hobby* for me!!! :lau:lau

Put some shelled corn in between the layers, you're girls will gladly stir up the compost and keep the nasty stuff buried.

ETA: They can also prevent it from hard capping.
