Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

Well, I'm hitting the hay as soon as I can get my 16 month old to sleep. I am driving to take two trios of chickens to a small animal auction two hours away in the morning. I'll have to take pictures of my redneck bird cages. We have to send cages with the birds with the birds so they can't be something nice and expensive but it has to keep the birds contained. They are made out of 1"x 2" welded wire we used to make potato cages and the tops and bottoms are scrap 1/4" lawan that has been sitting out in the rain for a month waiting for my dad to burn it and zip ties.
Gotta see this!

Good luck with the toddler AND the chickies...... get some sleep! Drive safe! Pics of cages.

Gotta see this!
Toddler is asleep. I'll take pictures tomorrow. It is dark now and I have the chickens in them in my shed overnight since we are leaving so early tomorrow and I want to keep them safe from predators. It's only 8:40 or so, so I'll probably catch up with some of the YouTube homestead vloggers I follow and then go to bed. Besides, I have a hot bowl of homemade applesauce to eat before I can go to bed. I spent most of the afternoon cutting up these apples and I want to enjoy them before going to bed.

I can't afford to stay here alone. It's also WAY more work then I can manage.

Not to mention it's where "we" lived. I can stay until I find something but I'd rather move on.
I'm in Ohio.....not too far from you. If there's anything I can do or if you want to get together to vent....just let me know. I'm so sorry for what you're going through

I said he can't have them. LOL No legal style divorce here. Have to split things up on our own.
Mine was a full on very expensive mess.
He got the land I got the critters but never did find a place I could afford that allowed anything.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. Maybe getting together with @Suzi18 can help.

Hang in there you're tougher then you think.

See you peeps in the morning. G'night!
Hahaha! A woman after my own heart. So refreshing to not have to be politically correct and worry about someone getting butthurt.
Right now it's a bit damp in there b/c it's been raining almost constantly for the past several days. Wet chickens come in and shake the water all over. Will that be an issue?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's working on coop stuff now. I spent the evening crawling around in chicken poop to get a box built for my cockerel so he'll have a little more sheltered space, plus block the wind coming from the south west across the field. I have to finish it off this weekend once the rain stops. I'm never done with this thing... I still need to deal with the poop board so I can use the pdz stuff. No one ever tells you that your coop is never done.

Well that explains it. I just unfollowed that thread. There was another one I unfollowed too. I get people wanting to stay 'on topic' but the situation was resolved & the op was participating in the convo. What ticks me off the most is that the people who complained the most about going off topic were taking it off topic themselves. Absolutely ridiculous, I guess 'the rules' only apply to some. Plus, if something came up, then someone who comes along later revisited it they'd get their panties in a bunch b/c they were done with it. SMH. IMO if an OP has a problem with the topic going off, esp after things are resolved then they are fully capable of saying something. I went back and looked to see if my 'off topic' comments were deleted and they weren't.. so IDK what they meant by 'tidy now'. And then they started attacking people b/c they didn't read through 500+ messages & offered a suggestion for catching the chickens. Sorry they didn't want to look at your 'off topic' photos of your chickens eating a pumpkin to find out about the 'on topic' chickens that the post was about and made the mistake of assuming the chickens were still on the loose. In fact, I have yet to see one person on THIS post attack a single person who pops in to offer a suggestion on catching the elusive chicken, or asking what's new with it so apparently it's not that hard to be kind and civil for some of us.

I think we all know that if we all got together to do something chickeny we'd all have different ideas of what to do, & wouldn't be able to decided on anything. Then end up sitting around drinking wine and eating while we ooo'd and awe'd over each others chickens.
I just love all of you nutballs in this thread..I PROMISE I will catch up one day.

Well, I said I would go to bed. I'm going to go there now. I need some sleep so I can keep tabs on my toddler tomorrow at the auction. Fortunately, even though he doesn't like being confined by being held, he doesn't mind being in the carrier on my back at all. which is great, since he is a BIG boy (>99.9% in height and weight). He takes after me in height (I'm 6'1" and his dad in being a chunky baby).

We did not sterilize ourselves at all..... although we were stomping all over their area....

We didn't touch any of the birds... but you're right... the rooster had been running all over there...... we don't go near our chickens unless we're in muckies, but wore the same clothing into their run..... so... :::shrug:::

The pile of sawdust is sitting pretty much between where the NEW ladies would go and where our coops and run are currently.

The *feeding anothers birds while they molt* doesn't bother us... or their age either...... they wouldn't end up being PET birds... but productive members of our flock... one way or another yanno? I'm just now anxious about possibly killing MY flock by bringing them here.... yeeeesh.
I'm still catching up but marking my spot for now.
I hope you haven't gotten them just yet.

Those birds could be ok or they could be carrying some nasty disease that is just not showing YET.
A move could stress them out and bring said disease to the surface..if that makes sense.
I need to find some good posts for you to read..I will in the am...if it's not too late.
